Well obviously they been winterised in the middle of a traditional holiday week , seems a tad daft , they were there last year , strangely landing pontoon was still out ,

Faced with borrowing a mooring and suffering potential wrath of owner we high tailed for tarbert , anchoring not worth considering as loch is now littered with moorings leaving little sheltered space , especially with swmbo aboard

There was plenty of room for anchoring in Loch Ranza near the head of the bay - in from the visitor moorings - when we were there 6 weeks ago. We're 2m draft and there was 4 to 5 metres minimum and much more sheltered in there. The visitor moorings looked most unattractive bobbing around in the swell while it was quite calm further in. Would much rather trust my own anchor than a visitor mooring of unknown quality.

Visitor mooring are run by the council and lifted and laid each year presumably they have one it early this year. The pontoon is run by Lochranza and catacol sea society.

So what is the point of removing them? Seems a lot of pointless effort, and likely to cause more wear and tear than leaving on and just doing a dive check in the spring.
Have they not spotted that a huge number of boats now stay afloat and in commission all winter

I don't know about that. I have just had a fantastic weekend sailing and we only saw 2 other boats. We were on our own in Port Ellen. There was us on a mooring and two boats anchored @ Craighouse. Considering the weather I thought it was quiet. Back to normal today I see.

Having experienced Lochranza and dragged anchor several times overnight (albeit in the late 1970's) I would conclude the exact opposite and go for a mooring of any kind every time!

We had to stay another night to try and catch up on the sleep we lost. A horrible experience hearing the chain rumbling all night as the wind howled.
The bottom was all thick seaweed on rocks, dreadful holding. No spare moorings available then, and very little space for anchoring.

No doubt it's rather different now...

I was there a few years ago when another forumite dragged anchor and almost lost his boat, caused by damage to his encapsulated keel. Only quick use of pumps by a local and the retained firefighters managed to save the boat.

I was really referring to boats within the Clyde, seeing as this was a Loch Ranza thread. Certainly lots of boats out and about last weekend around the Bute / Cumbraes area.

I guess less may be out West during the winter. Glad you enjoyed your weekend
