what\'s happened to muck-in sailors?

ever berthed in 50knots singlehanded while the comodore of the local yacht club watched and didn't offer to help? shan't be joining that club..

Re: what\'s happened to muck-in sailors?

Come on then, don't be coy. Tell us who the plonker was, or at least which club!!

Re: what\'s happened to muck-in sailors?

well - it was one on the Medway. anyway your other hand is as good as someone elses..

Re: what\'s happened to muck-in sailors?

Suppose there's 3 possible answers
1)You were so under control, you looked as if you did'nt need help.
2) The guy was incapacitated in some sort of way

Re: what\'s happened to muck-in sailors?

or 3) he really was a plonker.

oh well - I did it ok without him but it took a while for my heart to slow down again

You havn't said what the circumstances were. Did you ask for help?
Sometimes people don't want a hand and would prefer you to keep out of the way; it can be difficult to tell. Sometimes I "stand by", ready to help if needed.

Re: what\'s happened to muck-in sailors?

18 months ago on the Medway(so it wasn't me and I have never had Flag rank in any yacht club)
I stood on a pontoon watching a boat trying to get alongside,"want a hand"I cried "p*** **f" they replied,so I did ,and spent the next 20 minutes watching as they tried to extricate their boat from an athwartships,2 piles, and another boat's davits situation.

Made my day.

On the other hand, ever been trying to come alongside in difficult circumstances and had some 'helpful' soul appear on the pontoon and start shouting instructions at your crew? Very difficult to remain polite.

In one particular case I am thinking of, this plonker shouts to the young crew on the side deck to throw him the rope she was holding. Had she done so a controlled approach would have been impossible even if we had avoided a rope round the prop. On the other hand, calmly asking the cockpit if we would like a line taking would have been wellcome.

Trouble is, I am sure said plonker wandered off thinking what a miserable bunch we were. I never had a chance to thank him for his offer and explain why I called to the crew NOT to throw the rope.

I know what you mean.
I was on the pontoon at Salcombe last summer ready to help a boat which was coming alongside. I assumed that the 12 years old girl at the bow would want a hand, and I got ready to take the line. She, very politely, refused the offer. As the boat came in it was obvious that they all new exactly what they were doing. Beautiful boat handling.
The next day another boat was coming in and it all looked under control........ until thay were a few feet from the pontoon. Shouting instructions to the woman with the lines would have just stressed her, she wouldn't have understood. All I could do was rescue the line from the water and get it round a cleat. They got in without any damage, except to their pride. As she got off the boat she sheepishly said "Thank you. I really don't know what to do with all these ropes" (too which I said "Don't worry, I don't either!")

It's all part of boating!

I agree with you though. Having someone on shore trying to take over is so annoying!

someone standing by would have been nice - this fella walked off! YOu've got a point though - I didn't actually ask for help. Pathetic British reserve I suppose. That and silly male ego.

Maybe that's why we are told that we should "get in touch with our feminine side"!.......and there I was thinking that it was all to do with our underwear. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
