What\'s a \'Transom Mount Transducer\'?

What's a 'Transom Mount Transducer' as mentioned on this web page for a Eagle FishEasy 250DS? How does it compare to a 'through the hull' transducer? I would have thought you'd want to mount the transducer as far forward as poss...

Well as the name implies the transducer is mounted on a bracket on the transom such that it is underwater. Tha advantages being that you don't have to cut holes in the hull. It gives more sensitivity than a transducer mounted inside the hull coupled for sound by oil or water and the sound going through the hull.
Poorer sensitivity means readings only at shallow depth which doesn't matter to those trying avoid sand banks.

The disadvantage of transom mounted is that it may not always stay in the water when the boat pitches. If it is mounted deeper it will cause drag. It is perhaps more suitable for a power boat with a flat after section (bottom) such that transom bottom sits level with or just under the water. The transducer may be affected by turbulance at the transom however.

It is also suitable for a tempory mount where you might only fit it for searching for fish and remove it for transit.

So no probably not very good it depends if you want the advantages and can cope with the disadvantages. olewill

I had one on a RIB some time ago. Basically it just screws onto the transom. As RIBs have the forward parts of the hull in the air or in disturbed water at speed you can get poor readings. Mine was an Eagle and it worked very well. Be careful where you put it if you are a trailer sailer or use trailers to launch and recover from time to time.

So I have to do it out of the water...

Depends on your transom layout I guess. But you could always temporarily mount it on the transom ladder if you have one. I did that just to test mine.

i wanted a depthsounder in the cockpit as i couln't see the one on the nav station too well.bought a eagle fishfinder, and fitted the transducer inboard in a glassed in tube near the stern.it gives enough warning of depths etc and usually in dodgy areas you should be going slow enough that the difference between for or aft mounting should not be a real problem
