What\'s a Training Wall?

Planning a summer cruise outside of our comfort zone and into unknown destinations, perusing and sometimes actually studying charts and pilots - and the thought occurred to me 'just what is a training wall?'

Re: What\'s a Training Wall?

From English Heritage on line thesaurus:

"A wall structure built to direct a current into the desired channel in a harbour, river etc"

I always assumed it must be an old variant of "restraining" or "retaining".

Re: What\'s a Training Wall?

I always thought that they were something to practice running along or bumping into, but no: they are built where a river or harbour is coming out to sea across a sandy seabed. The wall "trains" the flow to keep the channel deep.

Re: What\'s a Training Wall?

A training wall can be very dangerous, if you are not aware of it. At high water they often lurk under the water, sometimes with marker poles showing. Then the tide begins to go out and they appear. I allways had visions of my old bilge keel Macwester sat stradling one of these walls as the tide retreats, and then I woke up just as she fell over!

These walls can be brick/stone structures or they can be steel piling. If you do get the right side of them you should have more water.

An outdoor exercise facility provided by Victorian foresight, all thought of before aerobics.

It's a wall used to teach people with fin keels, that they must navigate accurately. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: What\'s a Training Wall?

When it's finished its training it will be a proper harbour wall.

Porridge, episode 1

Mackay: Are you a practising homosexual?

Godber: What's that mean?

Fletcher: It means you haven't got it right yet.

Re: What\'s a Training Wall?

There's a big one running out of the river Ribble. The channel is was once training is no longer there to any reasonable degree, but there is a big hole in the wall, which is the standard channel now.

Ah Lady in Bed! You must have been reading my mind, as it was precisely at the Poole page of the Almanac that the thought first crossed my mind. And there I was thinking "What a silly place to put a training wall!"
