What\'s a Hylas

And yet . . .. . . how is it –this is not boring you I hope– how is it that of the four anchors only one speaks of a hylas being used. The four of them were there –or thereabouts– and only one speaks of a hylas being useed. Come on, Gogo, return the ball, can't you, once in a while?

Re: What\'s a Hylas

First a picture of Hylas at: Hylas picture

Hylas was the son of Theiodamas, King of the Dryopians. Heracles killed Theiodamas in battle, but spared young Hylas and took him into his household. Hylas became Heracles' devoted companion for many years and accompanied him on the voyage of the Argo.

When the Argonauts landed at Cios, Hylas went to fetch water from a spring. There a water-nymph, overcome by his beauty, kidnapped him and took him into the spring. Heracles and Polyphemus searched too long for Hylas, and the Argo sailed without them.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Come on guys. He did a lot of work with the art/method of anchoring, and his design, the Spade, is pretty good.

I don't say this because HWMBO is TOTALLY sold on them.

Even bought me an aluminium one I can actually pick up!!!

He does contribute quite a lot to any thread on anchoring, and he does know his stuff.

Nobody complains about the Headmistress, and she owns a company that produces lots of equipment related to marine loos.

Just think about it: if you designed something nautical, wouldn't you be proud about it?

And wouldn't you feel competent to answer any thread that was based on your knowledge?

I think we should encourage the 'experts' on this forum; it heightens the quality of knowledge available to the rest of us.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Peggy has only ever given information, never tried to sell a thing, and in fact if people want to buy her book, she tells them to buy it secondhand on amazon UK to save shipping costs.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

To an fair extent, I support your view, Becky. The more useful 'nuggets' we/I can squeeze out of those wot knows stuff I don't - even if it's just small increments on what's already understood - the better it is on 'ere.

The difficulty comes when some peeps, with strong convictions and opinions held with near-religious fervour, allow themselves to get 'aerated' over something else contributed. C'mon, we all know that some of the stuff contributed on here is a waste of bandwidth at times ( I knows, 'cos I'm guilty m'lud! ), but we also can let the validity of someone's experience stand on its own merits. Nothing except a few cheap larfs ( see above ) is to be gained by sniping at such an easy target as a self-appointed expert.

So, we others should 'wind-up' with, perhaps, a touch less acidity - and the 'easy targets' should, perhaps, be a tad less explosive when the shining truth of their heart-felt convictions is subjected to a bit of 'chain-pulling'.

In other environments, it is called 'peer review'. It is to be expected. The truth will find us all out.....

.....probably in the pub.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

I think anyone who is focussed on one aspect of something can in the end be a little tiresome. Then again a collection of such individuals often produce a perfect product. If after hundreds even thosands of years I produced a something better than any before I think I would feel rather happy about it!

The way I look at it he produced a great product. He let people know. It was tested and it works. Surely we all win?

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Oops pease accept my apologies. My point I guess is that people like Peggy and Hylas are exactly where we all look when the toilet smells nasty or the boat drags it's anchor.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Aside from all the other answers, I saw a very nice Hylas yacht at LIBS last year

Re: What\'s a Hylas

the big difference between the two is that Headmistress has no commercial interests in providing information here, whilst Hylas has often sailed rather close to the wind.

If that's a Hylas, why has it got a CQR hanging over the bow roller? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Sorry about the huge picture. I reduced it to a 600 x 450 thumbnail, but somehow it posted expanded back to original size, with detail lost. Not too sure that is a CQR though.
