What's a good price for a used Mariner 5 outboard?

Don't know how prices compare over there but I bought a 2002 Mariner 4hp 4 stroke longshaft for £400 recently.
Just realised your price is in Euros, so it would seem to be a reasonable price if it's a good one.

I've got mine for sale now. I've decided to go for it. Suzuki DF5 Longshaft. Looking at boats and outboards, £600 seemed like a fair price for a 2008, especially considering it was only first used in 2009, and wasn't at all for most of last year.

Not that I'm advertising, you understand, just offering a comparison for you :p

The important point here is that 4-stroke can be a major drawback !

Most around the 5-6hp that I know of cannot be stowed horizontally in a locker or indeed car boot, according to the manufacturers, as the lubrication oil may well flow into the combustion chamber.

If this happens of course the very least of one's worries is failing to start, there's a good chance of bending the con-rod etc.

The only manufacturer I've heard of stating their 5-6hp may be stowed flat is Yamaha.

4-strokes are also cripplingly heavy to lift; it may seem like 'just a few exrtra kilos' but it's the point between easy to lift or not.

Good 2-strokes around this size are more likely gaining in value...

how much

I paid £140 for a yam 5hp which although older than the one you show is about what I think their worth now

Have you looked on ebay yet ?

cheers
Mick

Funny that. I've had a Honda, Yamaha, and a Mariner (includes Tohatsu, Nissan and Mercury) 4 stroke and they can all be laid on their side. It seems that Suziki and Johnson specify how to lay them down as well.

It has to be the specified side, but to people who can understand Col Regs that shouldn't too much of a problem.

I've not looked on eBay yet, but certainly will (as well as other UK sites like preloved) if I get wind of a forthcoming UK trip.

SWMBO has just found a 5hp long shaft yamaha for sale on a Finnish h-boat forum, I called, and it is still for sale, has been in storage for several years, not used much, etc etc. Now I'm waiting for some pictures and maybe a fuller description. Hopefully it still runs and isn't all corroded up. It's on the other side of Finland so I'd have to get it shipped to me by bus. Oh yes and the asking price is €285.

Lakesailor,

what's this, follow seajet around and contradict him day ?!

I'm going on what I was told by the engine rep's at the Excel boatshow 3 years ago, and also what I've heard from other people with these engines since.

If you've got through all those engines and they've been changed in the meantime that's quite something; mind I was going by what the engineers said, not the manuals.

Nothing personal. I was just pointing out what I knew to be the case. If you tell people it can't be done when it can it may lead to confusion.
Most 4 strokes have a sticker on them poitning out which side to lay them and have lugs cast-in to rest them on.
I don't find it an issue as my engine comes off the boat once a year in my garden. If you unship the motor every time you use the boat it may concern you. The weight can make it more awkward if you are having to unship it regularly.
On the other hand they use less fuel and I find the engine note much more acceptable. Plus they start more reliably and tick over well.

I have both 2 stroke and 4 stroke and prefer the 4 stroke.

Decent small 2 strokes are going up in value in the UK, looking at Ebay over the past few years a good late 90's 2hp Yamaha can sell for £300 in the summer months. 5hp lightweight 2 strokes (Yamaha, Tohatsu, Mariner) can reach £600, far more than the same sized 4 stokes.

If you have the Holy Grail of tender engines - 2006 Tohatsu 9.8 - you can virtually name your price ! So in reply to your question, if the engines in good condition, then yes, its a good price.

Thanks! Although now it appears that one has been sold, there is another on the other side of the country (about a 12 hour round trip). "90's vintage longshaft 5hp 2str Yamaha, working when it was removed from an H-boat, stored in warm/dry conditions for about 3 years, 285€"

From the location of the seller (Turku) the engine has been used in seawater. As I would be buying this "blind", is there anything useful I could ask of the seller to get an idea of the condition? It's a tempting price, but high if it's all corroded up! Or do I worry to much about the seawater thing??
