whatever you do don\'t put your boat in the water. classic cop - outs.

Has any body else got any classic cop out attempts by marine engineers etc. like this one:
A while back I had a complete overhaul and service of my volvo 280 outdrive legs by Volvo agent engineers, whilst on the hard on the R. Severn. The bill was abot £1500. Several weeks later and hundreds of miles away in Pwhelli N. Wales, the seals to the outdrives failed and I got them replaced by a local yard. I then made a claim to the original engineers for recompense as they claimed to offer a warranty on their work. This was refused - they couldn't stand by their work because I had now, and I quote "introduced the boat into a hostile envirnment", by putting it in the water! Apparently a wisp of weed, or sand, would have caused the seal to split. Much argy bargy ensued and finally I got Volvo involved, essentially asking them if it was true that their products were not guaranteed for marine use. To their credit they ordered their agents to settle up immediately. It had taken me months of wrangling.

I have had similar pathetic excuses for poor service in the marine industry but that one took the biscuit.
Any body else had similar?

Blimey!!
That could open the flood gates. I have had so many bad experiences, interspersed with the occasional good one, with companies linked with the marine world I try to blank them out.
For some obscure reason they don't seem to live in the same commercial world as most others.

that's about right - all marine engineers have a different concept of time. apparently they believe its an everlasting commodity. A month is about the same as a day in their world of manyana.
Yes I know there are exceptions and I also know engineers I would swear by, but even more that I would swear at!

Volvo Penta engine warranty used to be Conditional that specified fuel is used

specified fuel was

Road diesel

Not available to 99% of pleasure boats /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

(taken from a 1988 warranty AD41, could still be the same now but Ive not read a new one)

Thats interesting, a Volvo Penta dealer told me that the bellows and seals did not have any warranty on them....I might speak to VP themselves!!
