Read somewhere that you can use washing machine liquid instead of Elsan Blue in the holding tank with better results but I cant remember if its Bio or Non Bio liquid I should use. Anyone know which it is?

Doom Bar, London Pride, Tribute, Spitfire and Timmy Taylor's Landlord..........in vast quantities most weekends!!. (All thoroughly cleansed courtesy of my liver before putting in holding tank!!)

You should not use anything formaldehyde based in a holding tank as it will retard or stop the natural bacterial process, Elsan blue is definitely a no, there are propriety cleaners which can be used. See Lee Sanitation for advice.

I've not heard of people putting anything in a holding tank, but I do put Aldi Bio washing tablets in the cassette of the loo in my motorhome and they are excellent & cheap. But when using a cassette loo, one opens the valve that leads directly into the tank & odours can escape. I may be wrong, but I think holding tanks are sealed from the user aren't they?

I've read for years about all this natural stuff but I'm pretty sceptical. Also Peggie Hall used to go on about having a bigger vent pipe so as to get more air into the tank to allow aerobic bacteria to survive. I'm pretty sceptical about that too. Frankly, if I could buy a nuclear warhead that killed every living cell inside the holding tank I'd be delighted

FWIW I use no chemicals but every few months I fill the tank w fresh water (via the deck connection) then empty it, then fill again but this time add a pile of dishwasher tablets, then leave a few hours then pump it out again. I reckon that must clean the insides a bit. I've also done this with biological washing stuff that you put in the washing machine. I have no proper evidence* but I'm happy with this method

*Others do. That Jimmy the Builder regularly gets inside his skat tank and photographs it, and posts the pictures on the net. :D

Yup, as said above, I like the idea of bio washing tablets/powder or dishwasher tablets

As for sealed from the user, it varies. With the wonderful Tecmas, there is a U bend upstream of the macerator blades and that holds water, creating a domestic-style odour block. Sealand Vacuflush have a firm odour seal by virtue of the vacuum seals (the flat one and the joker valves). Jabsco (urgh, I'm complaining about them again) don't have a seal and the odour blocker is just the macerator impeller which obviously does a partial but not perfect job mostly by accident not design. You can of course create a seal in a jabsco just by making sure there's a puddle of flushwater left in the bowl after you've used it, but not in bow toilets in a head sea

I reckon if you then used your demo rock and roll program on the stabs for a bit it really would be clean:cool:

Ooh yes. Fab idea and wonderful bit of out of the box thinking! I've often wondered how to get the cleaning solution onto the very top inside surface of the tank without driving out to sea and finding some waves
