you wanted an SSB radio in a year or so's time, but there were no what-ever certificated ones available legally in the UK or Euroland? I looked at a recent thread on this Forum that said awful things like 'inspectors go round the marinas and look to see if you have one of these things hidden on your yacht' and 'they can fine you thousands of pounds if you have one on board'. Can I buy an older one which might be certificated (-what IS the term? CE mark isn't it, just remembered) that would still work properly?
Or I could wire it up under the floor boards, but a bit difficult to use when sailing to the Azores or the Caribbean, or maybe set it up and keep out of site until beyond the 12 mile limit. Does anyone else think this whole regulation thing is a bit daft? After all, one wouldn't presumably use an SSB when a VHF will suffice.
And another thing, where would you recommend to take the necessary course? pref. local to Fareham, Hants
You see, I think that if you can take a course to use something, then you should be allowed to buy one of them. Legally.
Thats my rant for today. Feel better now./forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Sorry it is a bit disjointed, I don't rant tidily

There are SSB sets available which are CE marked, just not ICOM ones. Barrett or something like that, troll through the SSB thread on liveaboard forum, its in there somewhere, think it was one of Mike Martins posts. I also think they are cheaper than ICOM.

there is a radio school at mercury marina, can't remember the name offhand but i did my LRC there.

should be a fair number of used Icom 710s around, just make sure they're programmable, a few weren't.

Hmm, if it's not for a year or so, I'd be inclined to wait - regs can change, CE certified prices may drop etc.

Re 'inspectors go round the marinas and look to see if you have one of these things hidden on your yacht', is it not like the telly licence - the set has to be connected to the power and possible the arial (I can never remember the correct spelling - is it aerial?)?

A very few M710s around, and even the odd M700-UK (I bought one of these last year) The older one is not really suitable for connection to the e-mail, but I wanted one that would do the chat stuff + weather fax, and it is fine for that. Price was good as well.

You will only find the long distance certificate available from a very few high priced radio specialists, and certificate will cost abt £300.

Recommend that you also consider qualification during winter months as a "Novice" radio Ham, as that would then legally allow you to have a icom 706

The Icom 710 remains listed on the Icom USA and other countrys' internet sites as still being available.

Also, I assume that the later ones do not comply with UK requirements as I think in the last few years they have all been enabled to transmit outside of the marine bands - perhaps that is why they do not seem to be available from Icom UK.
