I have removed the windows from my boat - Triplex glass in extruded anodised aluminium frames - because they are leaking and in need of repair.

I need to strip them down to repair the small amount of corrosion caused by the ferrous joiner used to hold the top and bottom halves of the window frames together. I've had this problem with boat windows before and assume the manufacturers don't know that this mixing of metals will cause problems - or do know and rely on it for repeat business.

This means I will need to seal the glass into the frames again and I wondered if anyone can tell me what is the right stuff to use? In the past I have used clear Dow Corning Silicone Rubber (the stuff that smells like vinegar).

To replace the corroded metal I am going to try epoxy metal putty.

Re: What window sealer? re bob26

I've got the same problem. At present I am thinking of using sika with a primer to bed the glass against the frame and then more to hold the 'beading' strip in. Local chanderly recommends PRO stick 2000 from Sovereign chemicals. I am at the LBS on Monday week so will seek advice there, hopefully ......

We have recently refurbished some windows and were supplied the following sealants by Houdini Marine Windows, Southminster, Essex:

To re-bed the glass into the aluminium frames: Arbosil 1096 - a low modulus polyurethene sealant.

To rebed the frames into the GRP: Arbomast BR - a non-setting mastic.

They also supplied us with a special tool for fairing the Arbosil.

Give them a ring on 01621 772477 and ask for Charlie Stewart - he knows his job and is very helpful.

I had this problem on the windows of my Hustler 25.5 about 12 years ago.
The glass and the frame was cleaned as best as possible and the glass was fitted to the frame using clear neutral cure silicone (does not liberate acetic acid, so no vinigar smell, no corrosion and longer working time as it does not skin over as soon as it leaves the nozzel !) the original packing blocks were reused.
The frames were fitted to the cabin using white neutral cure silicone.
They still are in excelent condition without leaks.
