that the government (if thats what it really is) has put a tax on glass.

I understand that a low level has been imposed now but it is intended that it will increase rapidly. You pay on the amount of Kgs of glass you buy.

Will this be the death of pilot house yachts and gin palaces?

We should all complain at this latest stealth tax.

Not heard of this one, but then if its a stealth tax I suppose thats the idea.

What is it

A variation on the old window tax idea

Are we about to enter a new era of defenestration?

Dunno about pilot house yachts but could be a bit tough on the greenhouse and conservatory business

What nonsense will come next

Or is it a p**s take

Hard to tell with this lot - they've been taking the p**s since 1997, along with anything else they can get their grubby paws on

The tax has been introduced under the guise of another nanny state directive that glass is dangerous. People flying through windscreens, thugs hitting people with bottles, and people being cut by broken glass. The intention is to encourage (force) people to use safer alternatives such as perspex.

As part of an EU drive to improve safety for all, there is plan for glass to be banned in public in Ireland, with the UK to follow shortly thereafter. Studies compiled by employee groups showed that glass in the windows of workplaces can have a negative health impact on workers if broken and a ban on glass in the workplace is likely to be the first step.

However, a spokeman for Speksavers, says that this is just another backdoor means of penalising those with disabilities and an attempt to claw back the payments paid out via healthcare and disabilty benefit schemes, and is just the thin end of the wedge.

A leaked governement document outlines future proposals to tax wood, such as that used in walking sticks, and the foam used in the seats of wheelchairs. There is still some debate as to whether a tax should be placed on Labradors or all dogs in general.

Following the tax and ahead of any proposals for the banning of glass, ferry companies and airports have been stocking up on glass that can be bought duty free, but strict limits will apply.

Customs recently impounded a boat that was selling tax free glass in international waters and confiscated all glass on board, but were forced to return the windows when it started to rain.

An opposition spokesman, when questioned on the issue of glass said "we're looking into it".
