had frey bentos pies, seemed a fitting end.

Deposit taken, survey done, still an issue about the vetus engine pipes not meeting boat safety compliance, so till thats done can't get the safety scheme certificate, will take about a week. and we are off on holiday next monday. so its the end of my ownership of Delft. (I think !)

Anyway hlb went down to the pub, I endeavoured to get the tin lids off, surely, surely they can have ring pull ones these days /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Anyway back he came to be told "we've had a disaster, can't get the lid off your pie, - mine's ok". The bright reply was "how do you know its mine !!" cos the lids stuck on silly.

Good as they are, why oh why are these always, unless you burn them, slimy bits of pastry? naturally hlb thinks they are the best bits.

With all the years Frey Bentos have been making pies. You'd have thought a standard tin opener would fit. Else, as they are standard boat equipement, why not a ring pull!!

How is it. You can make pies at home, buy them saying home made at the pub. Or from the special little butchers shop. But they cant make much better than comes out of a tin?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Nice mixture of soggy pastry and crusty stuff. Just like mother used to make.

Whilst I'm about it. Whys this forum become so bloody boring of late. It used to be fun. It's all Gardners bloody Question Time now. Just Like Povertystricken Boat Owners. I mean. A bit of mending is ok, but hardly inspirational. This place invented, get togethers, Forum flags, so we all recognised each other. Big parties.

Stories of daring do's, storm ladened trips and near sinkings.

Fray Bentos pies might be a bit boring. But about the most exciting thing thats happened here for yonks.

Oh yeah! right.........

Your shaft drive heap o tractor parts was designed in the dark ages................

Come, come into the light my friend let me show you the way of quiet tranquility, smooth motive power and eco freindly machinery that will waft you into a state of serenity that you have yet to experience. With a tricky cross wind all you need is a feather like touch and there like magic you have arrived just as if you had lots of gold braid. Think of all the extra pies you could eat with all that money you would be saving on fuel. Think of the birdies, the whales, the dolphins the deep bue sea all humbled by your kindness to the enviroment, you could become a God, a man of worth, of principle, of stealy determination to save the world from noisey, smelly, kacky shaft drive boats, its in you my friend, lead and they will follow.

I hereby pass the baton of the IPS revolution to HLB, our new champion of technology, a big hand everyone....hoorah, hoorah..........let the master now speak........we await with bated breath, what will be his first momentous words...

A half sencible reply. At last.

I'm not knocking this IPS stuff. Maybe it's fine. Only after years in engineering. Fairly sure that they will have made it nearly imposible for other folk to make parts. But also make sure they break swiftly.

Only half sensible........its the future, just like garlic bread, I know I've seen it.

What is it with us lot, the world and his wife looks to new technology (proven mind) to make life easier, help reduce fossil fuel consumption, offer better performance for less fuel burn etc etc, yet when it comes to the British marine industry we stick our heads in the sand or cover our ears shouting...nah, nah, nah, nah can't hear you, I mean its hopeless, its like trying to give extra money for nothing to someone and they just keep setting fire to it, I'd rather stick another 50 gls in than give in to new technology seems to be the attitude.

I mean take outdrives, why on earth would you want half mil of gorgeous looking sport boat then shove old hat into it, furry nuff if you want to poodle about or go long distance cruising shafts might be the better option (at this stage anyway till IPS or others produce 600 or 700 ponies). I mean your standing there next to a sexy looking sports boat and little Jonny says 'what il do mister', oh about the same as that big ole flybridge bus thing over there, 'oh right, bit of a let down then'.

Ok so yes there is the issue of more maintenance on legs, but heck what's that in the scheme of things you've just spent enough on the thing to buy three small houses and your moaning about a few extra grand. Where's the adventure, the lets go and have fun, lets whizz around like I am the next Pearce Brosnan and show these shaftys a thing or two and don't tell me peeps buy £300 or £400K on a sexy sports cruiser to look all sedate and aloof, its hey look at me I am the dogs doofers.

I reckon the real truth is peeps with shaft drive are really closet trottle jockeys and get totally peeed off when some Italian stallion blows them off but pass it off with 'ah well you see when it comes to close quarter stuff we have the upper hand. In reality the O/D bod is the better helmsman, more skilled and in tune with his machine, its more of a handful but a more rewarding experience much like a driving a well fettled sports car as opposed to a great lumbering SUV.

Get a grip people, stop pretending your aloof from all this whizzy stuff, deep down you know you want all that performance your just scared of what your mates in shafty stuff will say.

And in honour of my new found 'freedom of speech' I have changed my avatar just to annoy those shaftys even more. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mind you VP maybe after my hide now /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hum no. I dont want to go any faster. It's a bit of a blurr at the mo. I used to have outdrives. But once looked inside them. What a mess. Any idiot where ever can make a new shaft and a prop. Volsplutter make them breakable for £££££££££££,s. So I dont likie them. It;s about control of life!!

Dont knock Fray Bentos pies on boats!

They are indeed fine things, and some boat owners care greatly for their Fray Bentos pies... They are faithful companions over many nautical miles and adventures in all winds and weathers, all the time clinging below decks quietly.. well.. .except for the odd clatter...

Eventually they become like old friends, and you cant bear to part with them... until..... one day....

..... the new girlfriend gets to work in the galley and chucks those that are more than four years past their Best Before date into the bin......

Before their sad decimation, here they are with some of their other companions of voyages near and far....

These fine pies gave several hours of pleasure and entertainment to the Captain and his crew... well... to his crew at least. Thankfully the decimation was not total... a brand spanking new Special Edition Steak and Ale pie was added, along with a Chicken and 3 Veg, and their BB isnt due for a good couple of years yet, so voyages will not be totally bereft of trust Fray Bentos pies just yet!

Not a bad stock for a two berth boat... and the rest of the cupboard is full too!

brought all the food back from my boat also, just throwing away a tinned spotted dick pudding with a sell by date of 2002, popular it wasn't
