While out a few weeks ago i had an issue with my port engine. While at 20kts and all going well i hit a large wave which slowed me right down...then i noticed that my left engine rev counter was at 0 and temp and pressure was falling fast.

Both throttles back to neutral and stopped just off Portland. I tried to start the left engine and all i got was a strange grinding noise.

I did fix it but any ideas what it was.....this is a good lesson in fault finding.

Ok, here's a wild guess. Your port engine was still running, but you had lost an electrical connection to the instruments on the port side thus giving the impression the engine had stalled?

Give that man a prize. yes that right. The connector had half fallen off the back of the ignition switch.

So i was trying to restart an engine that was already running. Simple when you think about it but it's well worth remembering to actually check with the throttles if its running!

lesson learned for me.

Hah shut down one engine once in a F4-5 after crashing of a wave. Thought it was overheating. Into a marina on one engine only to find the overheat was cured by reseating the connector on the back of the temp gauge. We live and learn :)
