Morning all,

New (to us) boat has a Volvo TMD22P engine and as we are planning to head to the Canary Islands and then the Caribbean later this year and do some extended cruising am thinking it will be prudent to carry some essential spares for any common issues these engines may have. So, any advice apart from the usual filters, belts, oils, water pump, starter motor?

Thinking any common relays that can fail?

I had this engine.

Spares to definitely take (the weak points, and you can't get spares over there):

Cam belt kit (and tools to replace)
Spare raw water pump
Spare coolant pump
Spare relay
Spare exhaust elbow
Then just the usual stuff (vee belt, impellor, oil & filters, fuel filters, etc.

Can I suggest that before you go, you remove the heat exchanger housing, clean, inspect for corrosion, and if all good, replace the o ring seals on the heat exchanger core. Also check the turbo and make sure that the wastegate is operating correctly.

When I say "I had". My one destroyed itself by corrosion of the heat exchanger, which cost more to replace than a new engine, hence why I say to remove & inspect.

Give it all a good coat of paint too, as the air out there is so saline that it corrodes any exposed aluminium quickly.
