I have just cleaned up some area on my Snipe trailer and applied Kurust, what is the best paint to use, I do not like Hammerite as it just sits on surface and flakes off again, I notice the finish which is original looks like a kind of Zinc coating. any advise please most welcome. JBD

I used some silver/grey aerosol for wheels when restoring the rowlocks on my Heron

Hi James,

I have tried many different solutions over the years but Hammerite has always given me the best results. The key is in the preperation. Extra time on preperation should mean that hammerite will last at least 5 years. Remember that after the primer(rust treatment) you need to sand it roughly back to give a good 'key' for Hammerite. It is always very temperature sensitive so do it in a garage with a heater at this time of year.

good luck,

Paul

Blackfriars do a zinc coat. When its in the tin its a creamy colour. when its dry it looks the same as the galvanizing. Lasts for donkies years. You'll have to go to a paint specialist for it tho. Its not in your run of the mill diy store.

That product by Blackfriars sounds like the thing I need, the original coating was extremely difficult to take to bare metal, I used Hammerite on many different items, car restoration, metal railings etc, I found after say a year moisture had crept under and when scrapping it off underneath was rusted, wonder if after painting a good covering of Waxoyl is worth it, or is this just overkill on my part? thanks for advise everyone. JBD

Hammerite is the work of the devil. I restored a rally car that had the interior done in it. Tooks days to strip, but had still rusted.
