What to look for when viewing a MAB

This page has a lot of useful tips http://www.pcmarinesurveys.com/Marine%20Survey%20101.htm

When I looked for my boat 10 yrs ago, I aimed at an older boat with a newer engine. I noticed a trend, most of those boats were poorly maintained. The owners that kept the boat in meticulous condition, also managed to keep the old salt water cooled iron thing alive.
Before forumits with a new engine reach for their guns, I said that it seemed to be a trend, not a rule. No statistical base.

I would inspect particularly all parts that will be expensive to repair or simply has be replaced;
Has it been grounded? In case, how was it repaired? Look for cracks inside around the aft end of the keel or evidence of repair.
Is the engine ok?
Is there damage to the mast?
Hull blisters
Sails
Teak
and more

Sorry I don'r really understand why removing a worn out teak deck & painting on non-slip would result in a loss of resale value...

Simply because some boats are expected to have teak decks. Hallberg-Rassy for example fit teak decks as standard on all models. If you take the teak off and put a perfectly good non-slip surface on, the boat will be worth less than one with a decent teak deck.

I think what you are aiming to do in the first instance is avoid paying for a pointless survey. Satisfy yourself that it’s a great boat then engage a surveyor to check when you are 90% confident.

How to be confident?
1) Allow 2-3hrs on the boat
2) Open everything and look everywhere. Take the mattresses off, look in lockers see what there is. Do they have a good spares box, tools, cleaning equipment?
3) does it all work as it should - turn it all on and off, check the functions
4) look at the wiring - bird’s nest
5) lockers - are there signs of organisation and love
6) get the sails out do they look good
7) ask any boat neighbours how often it’s used and if it’s loved
8) are there any records? How recent was the last maintenance
9) someone posted about smell and using your nose - good advice
10) engine - clean? Check fluids and belts to see if it’s maintained

Then, when you are really happy get a good surveyor to check

It’s what I did as a first purchase and it’s worked out well. (I looked at many, many boats before I had one surveyed). If their bad it doesn’t take 3 hours, it’s only when they are good that it takes time.

Its like buying cars and motorbikes. Hard to keep emotions in check, so well done for taking a mate.

This is off the top of my head so not an exhaustive list.
I try to break it down into 4 main areas

Rig - is it 10 years old. Chain plates ok? Leaks through to lockers? Roller jib ok.
Main and jib not to old and baggy?
Nav lights work?
Radar?
Vhf antenna?
Radar reflector?

Hull -
check seacocks.
check for hard grounding if out of the water (cracks round keel) and look from inside the boat to see if any ribs look deformed.
Rudder not full of water or with bearing about to go?

Engine - service history? Easy to change impeller and filters? Tank clean? Hoses look ok?

Deck
leaks, sagging or dropping when walk on it anywhere? windows ok?
Winches ok?
Tiller, wheel ok?
Anchor windlass ok?

There is always other stuff. Batteries. Wiring. Instruments.
Small stuff can be replaced over time.

Google Marine Survey 101 written by a surveyor with a load of experience and very very useful. Not saying it should replace a full survey, but will give you an idea of whether you want to proceed with the cost of a full survey.

So had a couple of hours of cupboard sniffing and the Wauquiez is a huge nope. Massively overpriced given the work that needs doing. Sweden under offer. Going to see a Condor 37 that's hopefully in better nick later today.

Foredeck leaks like hell. Stress fractures under baby stay backing plate. Impact crack in the starboard v berth bilge. Deck gelcoat needs a bunch of sanding and filling. Generally tired interior with a deathtrap looking original grill etc. Added to the hard to access 1994 2003T and it's worth 1/2 of the asking price IMO. Someone might want it as a project but not for me.
