Hi
It seems likely that we (2 adults + nippers aged 6 & 8) will be weather bound in Tollesbury for a few days this week, we have been there a number of times before so appreciate the general layout and activities - swimming pool, crabbing, walks around the marshes etc but there may be a request to do something new or different. My first thought is a bus to either Colchester or Maldon (is there a decent bus service?) but would welcome some local advice and suggestions.

Cheers

There is a bus service but it's not frequent (Hedingham buses I think)... I think you'll find it a bit restricting, maybe see if you can get a short dash somewhere else? Although, I can't think of anywhere that's much better, Brightlingsea has a better bus service...

The Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon is well worth a visit for all ages. They have a superb espionage section and for the kids a dressing up section.

The Thomas Plume Library for grown ups is well worth a visit; a chance to hold / read Drake's "The World Encompassed" only the second edition but great fun. For naval officers it is a reminder of the progress made by the navy over the years since the Armada (Not).

The Promenade Park and bowling alley plus other things are said to be fun; our kids are grown up now so a little out of touch.

I was at Tollesbury a few months ago with Wife and Son. We walked up to the Kings Head and had a pint but there's no food there. I googled 'Curry near me' and there is a place called 'Rubys' (d'oh) a couple of miles away. I called them prior to calling a taxi, to make sure they had room for three. They did, and they sent a lad out in a car to pick us up from the Kings Head. We had a great meal and they dropped up straight back at the marina afterwards. All gratis / enlarged tip. Marvellous entrepreneurship!

The pub will (or certainly has) provide cutlery and crockery should you wish to have your curry delivered there.

Thanks for the tips re the curry house and Tollesbury Cuisine - I'll keep those in mind for next time. I'll also add that the food at the marina bar has improved since we were last there (about a year ago).

Just to add our twopennorth. We are in Tollesbury at present. If you are fond of coffee and scones you must visit the Loft Cafe. It is in one of the old sail lofts on the right as you walk up to the village. Scones are to die for. They offer a full cream tea - can be coffee - with jam and cream utterly delicious!!
We also ate in the marina restaurant last and had a very pleasant meal. Better than last year. Catering is under new management I believe.
