I note there are quite a few Special Purpose Buoys on the chart. I can understand some mark pipes etc but some seem to be seasonal. (eg Apr-Sept ) What are the for?

This one just off Southsea for example:

Can,t quite understand the "chart"
Looks like a Pac Man Game .
Der mean the Yellow one?
Sometmes "Special marks" like a sewer outlet or summat?
Is is off a Plotter or a paper chart?

Spot on just to say that they're often not in the position that the chart says they are and not always from Apr-Oct. We very nearly hit one during a night passage that was well out of position

The picture is fussy because its zoomed in a long way and captured with a screen grabber, just so happens its a no anchoring area. If I zoom out you only get two or three anchors (or Packmen /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Its taken from the PC version of C-Map Max. The real screen is a lot better and the plotter even better, mind you I have everythng turned at the moment.

Can you check to see if them yellow posts move as well? A close highspeed inspection will do! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Oo Err!
Yer gots to excuse Me.
Now I squints a little harder I can see the anchor jobbies!
Old age mate, and Tescos glasses.

Clarify something for Me please.
If it is a racing mark, tempory I would imagine.
How come the lekky gismo knows it,s there?

Presumably a Yacht Club or similar organisation has plonked it in the oggin.
So how does the Gadgett know when said bods remove it?
Be gentle I,m old and have trouble with new technology, like vhs recorders and stuff!

There is an Info function you can park the mouse over object and it will tell you about them. For these (and I only showed that one as an example) it says Special Buoy Apr - Sep. I guess the database people show them if they are typically there, and I guess that is why sometime they are not on the right spot.

If I get the info for the no anchoring symbol it says this

ANCHORING PROHIBITION AREA. FISHING PROHIBITION AREA (area):

NUMEROUS CABLES

[/ QUOTE ]

And if I get info for one of the tide arrows it shows this

[ QUOTE ]
TIDE STREAM STATION [point]:

NAME: 50°47.03'N, 1°06.29'W
TIME ZONE: 0
Speed: 0.09 Kts

Direction: 327.37°

[/ QUOTE ]

Quite handy, but to be taken with caution I guess.

Because they are put out every year, they are also included on printed charts (usually with a Y underneath and Apr-Sept in brackets). You can download gps waypoints for them from places such as this

If you are using C-Map Planner to look at your C-Map charts and right click, using the Info Cursor, then you get the following Information :

Buoy, special purpose (point):

Buoy shape: spherical buoy
Colour of navigational mark: yellow
Status:
temporary.
Information: (APR-SEP),SOUTHSEA MARINA

I do!

My original question was really related to Special Buoy's in general this was just an example picked at random. I suspected many were for racing, but though it worth asking.

I saw lots of references to "Special Buoys" on the web but no real explanation of what they were for. (apart from where it was obviously marking a pipe or something)

lescargot, Frontier thanks for the info.
Crikey! it does make Me look like I,m in the Dark Ages.
I like that Tide Stream function.

I presume if a Yacht club bungs a Racing Bouy out, some Bod has got to tell a Database Bod?
I realise that these "Racing courses" are somewhat the same each Season.
Excuse My ignorance again but---- My local Yacht club suffers (as probably many do from shifting sands)--- so If one Seasons circuit is different to the next, cos of shifting.
Therefore if Database Bod aint informed the Charts/ Paper or lekky are inaccurate?
Glad I ain,t got one of those clever Gissmos.
I,d be in a right mess!

The good bit is they do predictions as well, just enter the date and time and it tells you the tide. They are also adding weather (only works in the Med so far)

But as you say if things change what you see may not be there or worse something may be there that was not before, like a sandbank!!! But it's the same for paper, once it printed or the chip is programmed that is it. It’s a snapshot in time. You can enter updates manually of course just as you can mark up paper charts.

I'd put one on the Christmas list if I were you /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
