What the hell is going on, R.Y.A. (Part 2.)

Surely this is a troll? It\'s a joke, right?

I teach business statistics, and you're conclusion is staggering in it's total lack of logic or common sense.

Come on, time to own up - you're having a laugh!

Put me most definitely on the anti-legislation side of this 'debate'. On this front, at least, the RYA is representing my view (I've been a member since 1984).

Re: Surely this is a troll? It\'s a joke, right?

I wonder - would all those posters who have objected to regulation of wetbikes also advocate abolition of driving licenses ans the driving test? I suspect not.

My personal guess is that regulation of wetbikes wouldnt make a difference to their safety but that is because enforcement would be negligible. If enforcement were strict, the training good and (say) a minimum age of 18 enforced, its difficult to believe that safety wouldnt be improved. Whether the game is worth the candle is a different issue. Personally, I would rather see the feckless suffer but the problem is that its no always just them, is it?

And James Stevens did not come over well on the TV so that hasnt helped the no - reguation case

Birdseye - that IS definitely a troll.

What in heaven's name has the objection to an INTRODUCTION of regulation on one thing got to do with the advocacy of ABOLITION of regulation on another?

Having pointed out the stupidity of the question I'm not going to even try to answer it.

Try some joined-up thinking.

Just to clarify...

My comments were about the 'statistical' interpretation of the number of replies, NOT about the logic or common sense of introducing licensing.

Dangerous precedent and one that is impossible

You have tried to link RNLI into it as receiving funds from Govt / Licencing ..... The RNLI themselves are first to tell you they have no wish to be other than publicly funded as a charity - if thet receive funds as part of Govt/ scheme - they will fall into the Govt Red Tape / Beaurocrat trap and lose their independence and Charity status. The charity status is worth a large %age of revenue coming in ... as it is possible to not have to pay tax on it.

As to other suggestions ----- Figures I believe show that even though we have a large number of boats in UK for countries size - thye ratio of accidents is better than many other countries ... take USA for example !!

Sorry but the soap-box argument of Licencing does nothing for me .... I am against and believe that sensible voluntary is better ... as then those that spend money to do it - which appears to be a reasonable %age of boaters - really want to do it then .... instead of being forced to ...

Oi! That isnt a troll (unlike some of my previous comments /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ). There is a clear link - both wetbikes and cars are potentially dangerous machines but the great unwashed of any age are allowed to drive one without any training or qualification but not the other. OK you can argue that cars are potentially more dangerour but that is merely a question of degree - wetbikes are still dangerous as has been illustrated..

Introduction vs abolition is totally irrelevant - you can only introduce regulations when a problem first appears. Driving license for cars were introduced in the first half of the 20th century after cars were invented about 1900 and accidents began to soar thereafter. Cant introduce wetbike licenses before wetbikes are invented!

You brought it up.

I pointed out that it was half-arsed, you have agreed with me.
Thank you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had you said that the people agin the INTRODUCTION of regulation for PWC would probably been agin the INTRODUCTION of regulation for cars, then I would have agreed with you.
I would be in favour of further regulation for cars. Compulsory training for and gaining of an advanced driving qualification. Within 5 years of passing driving test. With regular refresher tests, would sharpen up everybodies driving - or put them off the road.
The roads are very dangerous - I make a substantial part of my living from clearing up the wrecks. Lots of cars being driven by people who don't really have a clue.

The water is not so crowded yet and a knee-jerk reaction of " more legislation" could have consequences for all water users which would be a real PITA for us all.
