Need some honest guidance
Am looking to Beth/Buy a 25/37ft Boat for Semi Live On in Either Majorca/Costas or Within 2 Hrs Fly Time LGW
Idealy the Marina needs to be U K Friendly and not over expensive
Any Suggestions Would Be Appreciated
Thanks Y.all

Mallorca and 'not over expensive' don't go together, unfortunately. Same applies to all of the Balearic islands but if I was seriously looking for a berth in the islands I would try Minorca. Otherwise, the further you are from the airports, the cheaper it gets, so try Mallorca east coast. You might drop lucky. You may find this site useful.

Thanks Jim
Very Helpful
Know the Marina...was in Roquetas a couple of years back and drove down to Almerimar..sadly it was raining hard so did not have a chance to have a walk round
Whats the Bething costs for 10/12 meters
cheers...M A X...

Torrevieja has a new marina under construction which is offering some good deals at the momment the international marina there was also reasonably priced for monohulls (not us!). This isn't a bad jumping off point for the Balerics. Also Cartagena has a new marina which was reasonably priced and the city was lovely. We started out at Almerima which has a nice community and good facilities for work but the wind is strong a lot and in my opinion the cruising ground is not so good.

Hi We are currently berthed in cartagena and love it. We stayed at Almerimar for about one year , and although thenyacht based facilities were great felt that it was quite isolated from Spanish town/ culture. Also I would agree with limited cruising when compared with cartagena and surrounding area. There are two marinas in Caragena we are in the new one. Very friendly staff.

Almerimar is good - except for the shortage of shower/toilet blocks. Security is usually OK although there has been a spate of opportunist thefts lately (unsecured bicycles - that type of thing).

Our Bav37 is there now and it cost us a little over £800 for 6 months (Oct to April).

Hope that helps.

Alan

MAX,
We are 12.4 meters, so are charged for a 12-15 meter rate. Cost for six months is 1600 euros. There is an additional cost for electricy, paid by the day of use. Some people will only use it one in 4/5 days tro save costs. WE use it everyday we are on board and only stop when we will be gone for more than a couple of days. I think this is adding about 100 euro a month if used every day, but that's a guess.
We have a nice shower/toilet block near us and it is always available (or maybe I just get up later than most?). The supermarket is a short walk and is excellent.

Cruised down from France 3 years ago.Torredembara just south of Barcelona might suit.Met some Brits there who had overwintered and liked it.We spent 18 months (due to family illness) in Torrevieja Marina Internacional. No complaints.Town has high Brit Quotient as does Marina.Used Coys Cars for carhire to Alicante Airport 40 minutes away where loads of flights to most UK destinations.Suggest you try Navicularia for moorings quote.3 Lidl supermarkets and massive Carrefour in the town.Good bus service just outside marina.UK lending library run by local charity and loads of Brit social groups if that is your thing.British run chandlers near marina and one on site and spanish ones nearby.V.good spainish marine engineers etc.

Havingsaid that...if you want 'real Spain' experience then I would thoroughly recommend La Coruna or Villa Garcia de Arosa in NW Spain or Gijon from personal experience.

Re: What Spanish Marina....?

Completely agree about Cartagena - a really lovely place (but can't comment on the new marina).
Torrevieja (town, environs) is less than lovely, IMHO
Almerimar is good price-wise and community-wise, but located a bit out in the boonies . . . ?
Late last summer we were obliged to hole up in Almeria marina, which we found extremely well run and the town is pretty good too. Not often cited. But fairly small and may be difficult to get a berth in.
Further south in Andalucia, the Junta (regional government) marinas offer reasonable standards (including security) and cost (according to Costa prices) and are better than the commercial ones IMHO, but may be difficult (or very difficult) to find a berth in. Bajadilla (Marbella) is recommended by us, but it takes persistence and 'technique' to get in there and stay.
http://www.eppa.es/actividad/tarifasatraques/tarifas_i.jsp - gives a list of Junta marinas and prices.
http://www.eppa.es/lospuertos/lospuertoscategoria_i.jsp?categoria=1 gives a complete list, including links but also including non-Junta marinas.

Well, we like Duquesa. 25 mins from Gib, 1 hr from Malaga, so flights to/from UK no problem. A few liveaboards plus every service you could need in English. Then, go 10 mins inland and be in real Spain. I could wax lyrical for hours, but pm me if you'd like specific info.

Re: What Spanish Marina....?

Thanks Grehan and all the info given...This has been very useful and food for thought
Let you know when I set sail South

Re: What Spanish Marina....?

Completely agree re Cartagena - a beautiful city. Some people we met who had wintered there said swell could be a problem and colder than other spots nearby. They were in the old marina and said the management attitude could be iffy.Cartagena is very much a Spanish city and I wonder given the criteria set out in the original post whether it is the best base for a first timer.I also agree with you re Torrevieja. It is not an attractive town per se although there are some lovely little spots there if you look hard.We did not mean to stop there - we meant to go to Almerimar but as previously stated illness in the family forced us to cut short our cruise.Having been down to Almerimar it is a bit out of the way IMHO.Similarly La Duquesa - a place I love to visit on a cruise - but I wonder about wintering there as it is a ways away from things?.As a base I think Torrevieja has a lot going for it in terms of proximity to the Balearics and the prettier places to the north and it is reasonably cheap. From a practical point of view it has a lot going for it.

Not where you specify, but dont forget Lagos on the portuguese Algarve .... extremely cheap 9 month deal from September to June, and a truly fabulous place. You can cruise for the 3 expensive months, or just anchor at Alvor down the way.

Re: What Spanish Marina....?

I'd like to put in a word for La Duquesa. Pretty marina with bars/restaurants (bit Brit but real Spain 10 mins inland), nice small town 10 mins walk with several supermarkets and other shops, chandlers, boatyard, good English speaking engineer, bus to Gib or Estepona, good little liveaboard community.... the list goes on.

Try Port Ginesta situated about 20k sw of Barcelona. Plenty of berths (450 new berths 2007). Friendly staff, prices on their website. Airport about 10k (dozens of flights each day).
Regular buses to Barcelona (2 each hour) 69cents each way!
All facilities.

We're in port Ginesta at the moment and as you say its a nice spot the bus is now 1.25 each way, still cheep! We haven't met any other liveaboard people here. The place is generally quiet although livens up at the weekends. Quieter in the new part of the marina! Like Almerima the dust is a pain!
