I'm trying to find a new or nearly new outboard for my 16ft shetland 498.
What size do i need to make it plane with 2 people on board please.

also having difficulty finding a dealer who has anything suitable in stock, is there a rareity of used quality outboards around 25-50hp for sale

I suspect that most people end up leaving them in the back of the garage until they become used & unreliable (& in the way) before offloading them. Selling to a dealer is the best way to get almost no money back, so only a few will be p/ex'd & very few sold outright I guess. E-bay will have a few, but treat them all as "spares or repair" & you won't be dissappointed.

ive noticed the rubbish on ebay. there is a 40hp from a dealer for 1850 on a 2006 model year.
the boat is going to be used in the harbour and trailed to the arun and rarely inland as have family in leicester who live on the canal.
would i be better getting a new 15-20hp 4 stroke or have something to make it plane but second hand and worry about reliability?

so bloomin confusing

Your cheapest solution is fix the one you've got for river & harbour use, but keep your eye open & spread the word (like you are doing on here) for something bigger & better in due course.

Look in yellow pages for a blacksmith or engineering workshop locally & take the engine & handle into them for a quote. Don't forget to flutter your eylids :D You'll probably end up with a bit of a bodge or paying for expensive alloy welding, but you will be back on the water.

Good luck anyway, it's always difficult to find your way around stuff at first & others can only advise based on their own experience, which may not always be relevant.

The existing engine as I recall is what 10hp which would push the boat to more than max displacement speed easily.
What would it take to get it planing comfortably say 50hp (an uninformed guess)
What would give max semi displacement speed again say 20hp
Some one here should be able fix the actual HP to these speeds.
Whilst you can use less than full power you can't use more so bigger is maybe better but bigger is heavier and dearer .
Don't know if this helps.

i fixed the main engine which is a 9.9 johnson 2stroke but to get along against the tide is make 4knts and nearly 3/4 revs and is very noisy.

the yamaha is the aux engine and to be honest i just want something that is quietish and can get to hull speed without being so noisy so would need to be at 1/2 throttle or less when doing 7knts.

i may be better just getting a brand new 15-20hp 4 stroke. would like a 50hp but im worried that it may be old and unreliable and i dont want to spend more than 1500-2000
