What size oil cooler for Borg Warner Velvet Drive?

My boat has a BMC 1.5 diesel engine with a Borg Warner 71C 2.1:1 reduction gearbox. I need to change the exhaust elbow but as luck would have it the current elbow went out of production years ago and the new elbow supplied by ASAP fouls the gearbox oil cooler which is a Bowman 12 inch oil cooler. Due to limited space the only way I can fit the new elbow is to fit a smaller oil cooler so my question is what size oil cooler will provide adequate cooling on this engine/gearbox combination? The Bowman 6 inch oil cooler would be a perfect fit but will it provide enough cooling? I ought to mention that we are currently cruising in the med.
All advice gratefully received.

As it is in the raw water circuit & with the relativly low power of your engine a 6" cooler should be fine - heat transfer is dependent on temperature difference so even in the Med before oil temperatures get critical the difference will be big so a small cooler will be very effective.

My experience, Perkins 4236 with the same Borgwarner has a stumpy oil cooler and while I have never measured the length it is not 12" long, far shorter.

I have been told by a Perkins Rep that Perkins supplied engines to half a dozen crowds who did their own versions of marinising. I have just finished trying to find replacement hoses for the cooling system and I'm very much aware that they used different sizes of oil coolers.

I changed lately the oil coolers of a similar system (Perkins 4.108 and BW Velvet Drive 71CR) and these are the parts I used: Oil Sump cooler, Bowman EC80; transmission cooler, Bowman DC60. They are available with different hose terminals so that you can find the best that will match your system.
