Hi all, my yachts going back in the end of the month and I'm considering replacing the mishmash of mooring warps that were with the yacht when I bought her.
After searching through previous threads I've decided that 3 strand Polyester is what I am going to use, but I'm not sure on diameter.......the Jimmy Green website suggests 10mm.......seems a bit light to me............what size would you use?

Another club near ours insists its moorings holders use 18mm but many don't, I guess because of the difficulty in securing that size to cleats.

I and quite a few others on our club's fore and aft trots use 14mm, 3 strand polyprop and these survive for quite a few seasons before chafe becomes an issue and they maintain their flexibility better than nylon rope.

Just to be sure I use two at the bow and two at the stern, one at each end having a little slack

12mm with hard eye one end shackled to cleat on pontoon and soft eye other end to pop over cleat on boat. Experiment a bit with combination of springs and breasts until you get it right then make up permanent warps.

I would go for 12mm Nylon, should be OK for the cleats, a nice size to handle and plenty of strength. I assume you're talking about general warps - not just for your marina berth ?

I've used this size on a heavy 26 footer, with no problem even in strong winds with a heavy swell, and nylon has great elasticity to eliminate all the snatching. I can't comment on polyester since I've not used it.

I would agree that 10mm is a bit light.

Thanks for all the replies. She lives on a swinging mooring most of the year so the warps will only get used on marina visits.
I was originally considering nylon, but after reading some earlier posts, some suggested that it tends to go hard after a couple of years and that polyester was a better choice?
I think that I will go with 12mm instead of 10mm.
I am looking to get it from Outdoor Xscape , seems very reasonably priced.

Thanks again.

I made up lines for Jissel from 10mm laid nylon about 3 years ago. They aren't as soft as they were, but are still fine. Nylon does go hard over time, but stays elastic. Jissel lives on a swing and I only use the lines when alongside, so I reckon they'll last a good few years yet.

I made up identical bow & stern lines, just short enough that if the bow line escapes, it can't reach the prop. I also made springs around twice the boat length.

If it's only for occasional marina visits, then almost anything will do! Nylon does harden, but my 4-year old 12mm nylon ropes are still more stretchy than new polyester. So if surge is a problem, I'd still go for nylon. PE is too unforgiving. But that's just my opinion.

I find 12mm is better for handling, 10mm is a bit thin. As Arthritis takes hold I am considering going to 14mm. It's not about breaking strain, it's about comfort of use.
