Looking at Britany/Danforth anchors to use as kedge/ possibly storm anchor.

40ft boat, med displacement.

looking at a 14kg galvanised danforth with 10mm chain and then 13-14mm rode.

too light ????

I know that the Guardian/fortress ones are v light but v expensive

At 40 ft boat I would say a kedge will not be a storm anchor. For emergency situation anchor will be too big to use conveniently.
Not that I know exactly, but rule of thumb for 40 ft - 40 pound Danforth would be a normal one, storm one should be bigger...
Danforth is not universal btw, on some bottoms it may not catch, can be pulled out when direction of pull changes, may not reset then, as it can 'fly' in water with boat moving. No good for storm one. No comment on Brittany, other than I suspect the same drawbacks as for Danfort.
For storm it should be a universal, 'working in anything' one; those real hooks like admiralty or northill I know work, but cumbersome for a kedge. Maybe some of new kinds then.

Fortress or Guardian is the kedge of choice. The main use is for holding off a quay or to keep the boat from swinging where the pull is mostly in a straight line. Danforth and Brittany do a similar job but are heavier. On my 37 ft I have a Brittany big enough for an alternative bower and a lighter Danforth that is OK for holding off a quay and to deploy from a dinghy.

Unless you have a stern windlass or are very strong, you have to consider the weight you have to pull up. On a 38ft med displacement, I started with a 16Kg Danforth, 10m of 10mm chain and a rope warp. Too much like hard work though - so now have a 7Kg Fortress which is far superior (just more expensive!)

Definitely too light and too little chain. We had a monster Fortress FX85 with 200 feet of chain. For storm conditions you need three anchors out at 120 degree angles, the biggest one should be in the direction of the strongest wind. Plan B, if there are mangroves tie the bows to them and put two anchors out at 160 degrees. However, as a rule of thumb only long distance boats get storm conditons and then rarely. If you are not likely to be anchoring in those, then it's not worth the expenditure.
