I think it is time for me to buy a pair of binoculars so i went into Dixons at the weekend and came out with nothing. Why well

I guess if the magnification is too big then when being used on a boat bobbing up and down it will be impossible to see anything...........

If the magnification is too small then no point anyway ........

So what size is the best to buy for general boating use and why ......

Anyway having debated that with myself I thort that maybe a Single lens thing, like a telescope may be better. My one is is rather useless anyway - so is that the solution ?? It worked for Nelson !!!

Have a look at the marine catalouges. Most of the bino's in them seem to be 7X50. Those monocular things are worse than the wrong mag binos for stability. If your felling really flush, then have a look at the Canon image stabilizing bino's. A snip at £399.99.

The best ones are those stablized things that cost nearly a grand, and you need to get someone to wobble you at a boat showm but even then the image is incredible stable, no idea how they work, they are really fab.

But, seeing as how they are a blimmin load of money, much cheaper to just to drive over to what you want to see, and have cheap bins for other times.

imho!

7 x 50's were generally reckoned to be best GP binos when I was at sea......
Still got mine and use em to look for pubs, restaurants and the like. Too high a magnification can make it difficult to locate subject when bobbingabartabit!

7 x50, best for general use, used by RN and army, I used to use them on the top of an armoured vehicle and still use the same ones at sea, I find them best, for the prce aswell. If your an older person, 8x30's will also be fine.
