what size generator

Varies somewhat. Check specs on the machine in question and expect 22-2300 watts (10 amps @ 230 volt).

If you want to do anything on 230v simultaneusly, add the consumption of all devices.
Sum of watts divided by 230 equals the amps.

Remember that electric motors' specified consumption does not cover the peak draw at startup (in a washing machine the motor is only a minor part of the rated max since the heating element is the true big consumer).

We are going to install a generator on board can anyone tell me what size i will need to power a standard domestic size washing machine . Cheers.

I would get a 5kw genny, then you have ample and it will cover any "surge" startup current. Plus it should give you a little in reserve. I have a 6kw.

I think you will be able to find a washing machine with a power rating a lot lower than the 2.2 to 2.3 kw suggested

Take a look at Comet's website. 160+ models on there http://www.comet.co.uk/c/Laundry-Dishwashers/Washing-Machines/1723#!No=0&N=1723

I've peeked at few specs. 1.7 kw was the most I found and some are even below 1 kw. I found a compact Zanussi at 0.57 kw!

Recomendations are 2 x KW of the load in Kva for inductive loads.

ie 2Kw load needs a 4 Kva genny.

so min sugestion is in the 3.5 kva mark. be careful underspecifing, as it is inconvenient if you have to turn the washer off to use the kettle etc.

if space allows have a 1500rpm set, for longevity, and quietness in use.
