What size for an auxillary engine?

I've bought a 17ft motor cruiser (akin to a Shetland 535 although the owner couldn't tell me the make). What size engine should I be looking to fit as an auxillary engine?

Do I need an annode on my hull? It doesn't have one at the moment.
