apologies in advance if it seems trivial but i have to order from the other side of the pond and a sewn ensign costs a few bob

a nauticat 38 ketch - ensign flown from mizzen - i was thinking 3/4 yard but would 1 yard be better? am i being an understated brit?

never bought one before and the yanks don't half love their flags so i want mine to look right.

US courtesy flag is no problem as flags seem big buisness here with many houses / cars / trucks flying them as a matter of course - what a difference in attitude eh? if i flew a union flag outside my house in glasgow it wouldn't last a night.

cheers!

some know it all on the next boat was most indignant that it has to be flown from the stern - i must introduce him to this forum!!

a different google just brought up the following words of wisdom:

"The size of a nautical flag is determined by the size of the boat that flies it. On the fly, the ensign should be a minimum of one inch of flag for every one foot of the boat's overall length. The hoist is two-thirds the length of the fly.

and

For many years, until around World War II, most ensigns were flown from the leech of the aftermost sail—a sloop or cutter's mainsail or a ketch or yawl's mizzen. That position is still available.

So thats that then - 1 yarder it is! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh damn!

There I was thinking that flying a big'n dragging in the water was real macho and trying to get up enough speed to "get it up" was for real boys?

Re: Oh damn!

The biggest one Ive seen is a guy who had is main printed or sewn? with the colours of the duster.

When you say an inch for every foot of boat is that in the diaganol (cant spell today) or the height or length.

If you have a 40ft boat and had a 40inch duster it might mark you down as a .......head

Re: Oh damn!

i presumed it meant 1" of fly not diagonal

by the way - the septic on the boat next door went out this morning and i recon his star spangled banner was easily 1 1/2" per foot of his J29 - it was dangling about 6" above the water!
