Aircraft carrier? At a talk I was giving about two years ago an ex- carrier deck officer was in the audience. He told me that in any sort of wind they always dragged and stationed somebody to monitor position full time. Whenever he judged they had dragged far enough he would signal for the anchor to be raised and they would steam the ship back upwind to their original position.
