What should I put on my cockpit floor?

We've got a Heavenly Twins which has a very wide but short center cockpit (about 10 foot by 3 foot). The base is large patches of non-slip molded GRP. The gel coat is white so you can imagine what it looks like after a weekend at the marina - the white ends up grey and the grey molded non-slip ends up speckled black. I had thought of tek-dek but having it made up costs more than I can afford (about £600!) I have an idea that there might be a nice soft rubber matting, it has to let the water through as the cockpit is VERY shallow and needs all five cockpit drains working. Whatever I put down should be easy to cut to shape, soft on bare tootsies and be UV stable - any ideas?

Thanks for suggestions.

What about that sectional plastic flooring stuff its got holes in I think its used for workplace floor mats at work benches etc.

They use non slip in swimming pool changing rooms .. Plastic with holes .. Not sure how your feet would be .. We use CROCS onboard and leave shoes at the stern .. Great and non marking .. Great range of colours too .. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ..

G'day Simon,

We used to have some outdoor marine carpet on the cockpit floor, UV stable and cleaning was a rinse over the side. Cost effective and easy to cut, rolled up when not in use. Its prime task was to keep the deck cool under bare feet.

Available in a number of colours and drains freely, t6hough we did have the rear corners cut out to ensure the flow would not be reduced by the carpet acting as a strainer.

After a trip we would drop it overboard and give a shake in the water then bucket wash the cockpit floor, drop the carpet back in and only remove it again when berthed, then it was rolled up and stowed on the seat, and floor scrubbed ready for the next trip.

I would avoid any rubber matting as this may prevent or reduce drying of the deck area leading to a mould problem or other stains.

Also avoid any 'hard' materials like teak grate as they tend to mark the deck.

Other alternatives include banning anything but bare feet on board and have a water filled tray at the step off point on the pontoon or at the base of the boarding ladder when beached.

Avagoodweekend......

outdoor marine carpet

[/ QUOTE ] Sounds great - any idea of a brand name to google?

We love crocs too, Holly has five pairs at the last count and even the baby has a pair, but the dirt still comes aboard!

The last issue of PBO, or maybe the one before that had an article in the new products section that might do what you describe.
The pic showed a bright blue plastic carpet which can be left loose or fixed with poppers. Its US made principally for mobos.
I don't have my copy or I would have given you the website reference but my memory it was something like marineflooring.

Pale grey paint with non slip additive of your choice, repaint after 3 years.

Thanks for the tip about the carpet - anyone got that issue of PBO to hand?

Oh, ok

I have sailed with astroturf but it does feel a bit 'wobbly' underfoot

Plan D, subsectionB (expensive). Fit a cockpit shower outlet and scrub off after each weekend ?
