what`s the most useless thing to take on a cruising boat?

I was told a different version - a wheelbarrow, a spade and a Naval Officer, but the drift is the same.

I just had a tremendous chuck out, last weekend, mostly of spare parts and tools, but also on the list were board games and fishing kit.

Dead weight crew, you know the type despite a briefing just sit there, having been given clear instruction stand there with a warp in hand and watch the boat being blown off the pontoon!

I have carried a cricket ball for longer than I remember. It was on a previous boat, many years ago, and got carried over. Maybe one day on Goodwin Sands....... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I bought some tools and bits from Screwfix for the boat, and they sent me a free gift with my order - a spirit level!

Give it to someone with a cat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

with the boat afloat a spirit level ensured this!

As long as the boat doesn't have a permanent list. Or is not the sort of boat to lean where ever anyone inside is sitting or standing!

Oh! A bottle of dutch gin. Even the alcoholic won't drink it.

[/ QUOTE ]
This is worrying - I carry lots of Dutch Gin aboard, and have one or two as a nightcap to ensure I don't get woken by dragging anchors, impacts etc.

I used to have Scotch, then switched to Armagnac on the theory that, because it was made from grapes, it wouldn't really be "mixing" drinks with all the wine drunk earlier. I still got raging hangovers, and was on occassion violently sick in the morning before slipping the mooring.

A doctor friend said where I was making my mistake was in drinking coloured spirits, and that I should drink clear ones. (Sounds like he's given up meths for the turps). Hence the Dutch gin, which I drink neat, and which works pretty well. The First Aid still includes "Alka-seltzer XS" in case - most efficacious.

P.S. How does a spirit level work, and why is necesary? Unless the bottle is opaque, you can clearly see the level.

The most useless thing on my boat is the Log. The wretched thing never seems to work for more than a couple of days before getting glogged up with weed.

Re: Ours tastes rather like

liquid paraffin. All together to like something yer mum said was good for you. I do like gin, I'm a Bombay Saphire drinker, early in the evening. Although I'm becoming partial to a Ricard before dinner. The nightcap, on "Peppermint" tends towards the Mountgay rum or a Bushmills. Both go well with coffee or hot chocolate.

You'd need a level or a dipstick for my dutch gin. It's in a stone bottle.

A boules set.

[/ QUOTE ]

Couldn't agree more - the Boules set is one of the BEST things we have aboard, and is used frequently at Flint Island (Stone Point to non Swallows & Amazons).

We also carry 2 frisbies, a stunt kite, a large pump action water gun, and a rounders set. The two cheaply acquired small wheeled scooters put aboard four years ago have only been used the once though! This makes them a waste of space, unlike the liferaft which has so far (touch wood) never been used.
