What revs should my penta 2002 tickover at?

Does anyone know what the revs should be at tick over once warm for a Penta 2002.

The reason for the question is that mine seems to wobble a bit under tickover but is steady when under revs. I have replaced engine mounts etc and I'm just left wondering if she needs to tick over slightly faster?

Any opinions welcome!
 
Most people seem to want to set a diesel to tick over as low revs as possible. Anything from about 750-1000 RPM is usually OK and if it is dancing around on it's mountings at tickover when warm you will do no harm at all speeding it up a bit.

Is that from personal experience or hearsay? I'm very pleased with my Volvo marine engine.

775-825rpm according to the workshop manual. If that's a bit wobbly, you could increase it a bit, but do look at you mountings - you wouldn't be the first person investigating a wobbly idle find it's only gravity holding your engine in place /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

BTW, I'm no lover of Volvo - even tho (or maybe because) I've got a 2003 myself - but have a look at car manufacturers and try and see what useful information you can find on their web sites for older vehicles.

I had a mate once who had a special edition Vauxhall van. At 5 years old, he could no longer get the SE specific parts. "We're only obliged to supply parts for 4 years, Sir." Makes Volvo look positively benign!

Be a bit cautious about speeding the idle up beyond what Volvo recommend. I dont know what clutch is used in the 2002 but if it is (as I suspect) a cone clutch, you will accelerate wear with a high idle speed.

If the wobble is really bad (all engines move about more at idle that when pulling, and the fewer the number of cylinders generally the worse this is) look first to the mounts and then check the valve clearances / compression.
 
750 - 1000 rpm

it will vary with how warm it is.

Don't expect any vertical 2 cylinder engine to be balanced - it's an impossibility, though Bukh disguise their wobble by using an enormous contra-rotating flywheel.

Welcome the wobble, higher idle speeds dramatically reduce the life expectancy of your sterngear and gearbox.

Mine idles at 600 rpm which, judging from these replies is a bit low. It wobbles a bit but nothing dramatic. I might now increase it a bit as the cooker vibrates at this speed!
 
I speeded my 2001 diesel up a bit because ' rigging shake ' was driving me nuts.

THis was done with the blessing of a kosher engineer. I assume one lung jobs are the worst.

I don't have a rev counter which is probably a blessing . If I want to go fast, I turn the throttle up until I get black smoke - then I throttle back a bit till it stops. Seems to work ok. THought I'd throw that bit in for people like me.
 
I got a hand over note included in a pack of Volvo info and there is a note from a Mr E.G. Bottrell who recommends a speed of 1500 revs for five minutes before moving the boat. Have to say I found that around 1200 is about right for me, no undue wobbles and it soon warms up. There is also a cold start procedure that requires the stop handle pulled out and returned before turning the key. seems to work. Then I reduce to about 900 and after that the lever returns to neutral the button pops out and its down to about 500 before the gear is engaged

What a wise man. He probably found that 5 mins at 1500rpm (maximum charging voltage delivered) probably avoided 'stall' due to overloading the engine.

By 'stall' I mean that with the propellor loading the engine (in gear), the power absorbed by the alternator charging low batteries is such that as the rpm rises towards 1500, the charge rate rises disproportionaltely, and prevents the engine achieving 1500 or above.

Until the charge rate drops off a bit.

Very wise...

500 / 1200 / 1500 rpm will make little difference to warm up time without a load. 1500 makes a massive difference to charge rate however.
