Everyone is saying that its going to be the same price as road diesel, about £5 a gallon. Thats about £1.10. p.l.

The UK is a member of the EU, but this is not the average price in the EU. I know for a fact that the price of fully taxed diesel in most of the Med areas is only £3. per gallon, i.e. 65p.p.l. So good old rip off Britain strikes again! We are members of the EU when it suites the government and when it does not, they charge us what they like! The tax duty on our fuel is massive and covers several layers of tax going right back to the war.

I have had 20 years of boating so I count myself lucky that I have been able to scrape together enough to have a boat and run it, but with the ever increasing cost of boating these days coupled with the fact that as I get older I seem to be unable to earn what I was 10 years ago due to younger minds being demanded, I will be one of the boating cummunity that has to pack it in!

I have worked out that from Chatham to Ramsgate will cost me over three hundred quid if the price is a fiver a gallon! and I don't even like Ramsgate! I can get there by car for £15. Why would I want to spend that kind of money?
Sell the boat and take holidays to the sun I think. The boating industry has just lost its first sale as I was going to install a new Nav system for the flybridge and below which was going to cost a good few quid! hey ho.

Good Christmas wishes to you all,

Barry

Time for a graph....

Barry. I understand exactly what you are saying, but ask yourself what will be the effect of this on the sale price of your boat. Fill your tanks ready for the first part of the season, wait for the dust to settle as what we are speculating on is the worst case scenario Smile and the world smiles with you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Geoff

They sent me all the paperwork and gave me an option on the berth. After having gone over the paperwork I decided not to go ahead. I thought I would be dealing with MDL but it was through a spainish company that they are making arrangements with.
After much thought I decided that I would want to travel around much more, staying in one place does not really appeal, my brother has been cruising the Med for the last 8-10 years and knows this coast very well. He has told me that there is very little there for the boat owner and it is also a very windy area so seas can get quite nasty.

He is now in Greece and says a annual rent for a berth 11-12 metres is only around £1500. per annum. So I quite fancy renting a berth and crusiing the greek islands for a year or two!

Thanks for asking,

Barry

Yes I agree with you Geoff, I will not be making any knee jerk decisions. I will wait until we know what is going to happen to the price and then decide what to do. SWMBO and I have more or less decided to move the boat in 2008 to Greece to play in the sun in our old age! diesel will be a lot cheaper there in 2008!
Are you going to be at the marina before xmas? fancy a pint?

I meant to write there and back!
she burns 12 gallons an hour, twin 165s which are small these days! its a 3+ hour journey so thats about 36-40 gallons each way. That could work out at £400. if the price is £5. per gallon! sorry I can't think in metric!
You know me Clive? I changed my forum name!
