What Radio to get with AIS

I'm happy with my GX2200e. For one thing, I like the controls -- it has rotary knobs instead of up and down buttons, which most of the others have. Much more cilivised in my opinion.

Quite surprised to find that the V50 and the Link 8 do have different manuals.
The only specification difference I can find is that the Link 8 does not seem to have the wireless remote mic option that the V50 (and the Simrad version) offer.
£80 price difference seems a lot to explain just by that. (That's just the difference in the base unit - the remote mic itself is £150)
I wondered if anyone has investigated and knows of any other differences please?

It's brand values.

With the GX2200 (or any other VHF radio with AIS) will the standard old VHF aerial work or does that have to new replaced? Thanks.

As long as the existing antenna works fine then no reason why you cant just use that. I decided when I did mine that as I was having a new radio I would replace the whole lot.

Well I went the other way and bought the ICOM M-506. I found it a better choice for myself. But it is MY opinion. I did peruse all other models above and below before I settled on this one. I found it to be in MY case the best value for money. NMEA 2000 plug and play and NMEA 0183 for GPS.
I also like the big knob and the intuitive way to control the radio more than any other model.

I'm saying nothing :ambivalence:
