Before I go and buy a Bosch Random Orbit sander (because my other Bosch tools have all been good) are there any recommendations or sanders to avoid. The PEX 400 I was looking at seems to have mixed reviews...

Looking ideally for £100 (ish) or less and rated for DIY/light commercial use.

Any thoughts?

I can wholeheartedly recommend the classic Makita palm sander - I have an early model (sans dust collection bag) and it owes me absolutely nothing ...
Had it for many years, and I've lost track of the number of jobs I've done with it, including de-varnishing a bedroom floor, and several hull repairs. Every few years I open it up to check the brushes, but they seem to be lasting forever.

Georgio,

I have recently purchased an Einhell (BT-RS 420 E) Random Orbital Sander from Amazon, cost £34.23.

I have not yet had the opportunity to use it in anger but it is a reliable German product (I am told) and seems well made and good value for money. Certainly worth a look.

I got the smaller Bosch PEX220 for doing the hull last week. I played with a number of different ones in B&Q and chose it because it was the smallest and lightest one and I'd have to hold it above my head for a few hours. It proved to be plenty powerful enough and I'm glad I chose it. It was on offer too. :)

Weight is worth bearing in mind. My Metabo is quite heavy.

If money is no object the Sealey ER150 is a superb random orbital, mine is 15 years old & has seen an awful amount of use, Mind you at £350 plus for a new one it ought to be! Bosch should be fine.

Look at the orbit size. Some you can adjust, some are fixed. A big orbit is your friend.
If you have a compressor, air sanders best as they only weigh a few 100g.

We have a few air sanders at about 180 quid each but they had some in lidl recently for £35 and they are every bit as good!
