Just read the post a few below,

Was going to get a garmin gps/plotter for the cockpit. Maybe not know. whatt make is best!

What the best one to get, need charts for South England and France.

Was hoping to spend £500/£600 and also if I went further what and where is it best to buy charts

Any advise would be a great help.

Garmin 3005 is not bright enough for cockpit use - I have one in the cockpit and really struggle to view in sunlight.

Big vote for the Standard Horizon. The 180 is good but I went for the 300, just over your budget but worth every penny in my opinion

maybe affordable with the VAT reduction

Standard Horizon 300

Bought this one because it fitted the area at the chart table.

Easy to use and good instructions.

Have just connected our auto pilot and other instruments--good diagrams to work from.

Check with as many dealers for best price and if they offer a chart area as part of the deal. Perhaps might be worth buying after the boat show.

Picked up a Garmin 555s at SIBS which is in your price range and came loaded with South Coast charts. Built in ariel means one less cable etc. Linking this to an Easy AIS II was straight forward.

IF you can find the time a day at the London boat show would be good to see the size of some of the screens an how the menus work.

There isn't a "best make" - you need to choose what suits you best. The SH CP300 is good at your price point of £500/£600, but also look at the Raymarine C70, with a slightly bigger screen, available with £250 cashback making it around £545.

Charts first

plotter second.

Decide which chart format you best like then get a compatible plotter.

For me Garmin make the best GPS/plotters, but their chart format is IMHO poor.

I currently use Navionics charts, but IMHO again, none of the plotters suiting the Navionics cartridge are particularly good technically or in terms of value for money.

So I'd probably, in your position, opt for Standard Horizon (Yaesu make good transceivers) and C-Map (the most ubiquitous chart-format)

Re: Charts first

Hi
thanks for the advise above, never looked at the Horizon so will be worth a look.
Have a good Christmas to you out there!
