was told not to paint mine only to use the same sort of lacquer the manufacturers would use. Definitely not to use antifoul - that came from Steel Developments who re did my old SX prop.

Have the same thing now with new duo props (well 2yrs old), paints coming off them so interested on what folks suggest.

You can buy them off me if you want. Stick 'em in your lounge as a talking piece.

You're right that it was corroded. However here's the other one...

.

Notice that most of the paint is still on there. So did the other prop corrode coz there was no paint or did the paint fall off because of the corrosion? Both props had been painted by Steel Developments at the start of the season and fitted to a 12 month old boat by an authorized VP dealer.

I am afraid that the first prop has suffered an attack of the "alumowormus giganticus clockus" as the name depicts it only attacks a right hand prop.))

I've had good results with International's VC-Prop-O-Drev which is a teflon paint. Mind you - that would be on a lower speed prop.

Is it not a case that the electrolytic action pushes the paint off if it can find a was in.

That prop looks like it has hit something!! What ever happens, new props all round I feel.

Thats coz SD don't etch prime them. Dunno what paint they use. It looks like normal gloss to me. I picked up my prop last year from them. The paint was still tacky and smelt like a normal gloss.
SD do a brilliant job for the money. When I get props back from them. I rub them down and give a coat of Acid8 etch prime. Its in spray form so easy to apply a couple of coats in a day. Then after thats dry I normally give a couple of coat of Smoothrite, again in spray form. Gives a good longlasting finish.

There is bugger all you can do if you run in gritty or sandy water. The paint is gonna come off no matter what you put on it. Same applies if you ground the things as well.
Failing that, go get yourself a set of stainless steel jobs!

edited coz I can't spell

I've just replaced. (arguably not needed) Maybe 14 year old or deffinatly over five year old props. Not anywhere near in that condition. But not seen any paint. Your anodes are F***ked. Or not working. Get them fixed.

I have also had good results with International VC Prop-O-Drev. See http://www.yachtpaint.com/uk/ and look under antifouling.

Not too easy to find but it is there.

What causes the paint to come off in the centre of each prop blade, sort of thumbnail size, uniform in shape and pattern on each one? (stern drive Alpha 1 btw)

TY in advance Dave
