What p[aint for floor bearers in saloon?

Hi everyone, I'm replacing all the wooden floor bearers in the saloon on my Moody 33. I'm replacing them because at some time in a previous ownership, there was what looks like an engine oil and diesel leak into the bilges. I started by scrubbing out the bilges and removing the plywood floor and then realised the the wooden, 2x1 softwood bearers, where also contaminated so took the decision to replace them, BUT what can I use to paint them? Can I get away with a 'Dulux' primer/undercoat? or what is best? My wife says use a Cuprinol preservative but I'm not so sure.
What's the Forums recommendation?

An Aluminium based wood primer then Danboline from International or Blakes equivilent

for me it would be to apply detergent and bleach, then ali primer and dulux.. replacement is a big job.
If you DO replace them, then ali primer and dulux again, cant see any need at all for a fancy paint in that application.
Our seastream 34 has softwood bearers and they were just primed from new, 27 years ago, still like new.. just make sure you have good ventilation to keep them dry.

Hi captainslarty, I've removed the bearers - they were only screwed down, took them home and scrubbed them with loads of detergent but they still are greasy and still smell so I will replace them. I thought just scrubbing them and repainting would do the trick but no way. I've now cut some replacements and will paint them with a primer/undercoat or even deck paint as I have an unopened tin. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's very strange. You can spend a lot of money on some expensive oil such as Deks Olje or Varnol, which is supposed to soak deep into your woodwork but doesn't, but if you spill engine oil or diesel on it, it's there forever! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
