I changed my 1998 Mercruiser 4,3l oil and filter last week and I used the only oil recommended by Merc and that's "Quicksilver 4 Cycle Marine Oil", It's a 25-40w multigrade oil.
You can pick this up at any chandlers. for about £23.00 for a 4litre(approx) bottle.

fwiw,
As per recent articles in various boating / sailing mags do make sure you use the correct oil as per the 'full' spec by maker - not just the lube rating. Lots of the modern / new oils have lots of additives / detergents to react with the things the modern / new engines produce. Wrong oil spec or using a fancy new brand of oil has produced alarming and expensive problems.
At your age of engine it is likely that a very simple / old type / cheap oil will be the correct spec - read the fine detail not just the lube spec.
