My wife recently lost the run of herself completely and bought me a honda 2hp 4stroke outboard for my birthday!!!

Only problem was it was a display model - so no manual. On the chassis it has a sticker saying 10w 30 SAE oil. However in the motorfactors all I could find was 4stroke lawnmower oil with 30sae on it.

Is this the right oil for this outboard?

what is the running in for this outboard?

Many thanks,

Jason.

I have the 2HP & I use a standard engine oil from your local car accessory shop - 15w 40 if I remember... - I'll check tonight and report back tomorrow

Or you could go to your nearest motorcycle shop and get some from there in bottles more akin to the size of engine. Uses the same stuff as my Honda RC30.

I've just checked in the manual: what you need is 0.25 l of SAE 10W-30.

Don't forget to keep the motor vertical or lay it only on one side (flank opposite the one with the tiller downwards) or you'll have the oil all over the place except in the sump!

i agree.

Running-in wise, normal advice is max 75% throttle, and never rev it waah waah unloaded. Change the oil as often as you can is key to nice smoth motor. I got a Pella Pump to make this easy peasy.

They're air cooled,so can be a bit noisy...also not much intake silencing by the sound of them.

Stay away from lawnmower oil, use a marine/car/motorcycle 10-40,15-40 fourstroke oil & change it often.

Many thanks for the offer -

I have been on to where my wife bought it and they are going to get a manual for me. So hopefully I won't have to prevail upon you for a long photocopy job.

However I also noticed there is oil in the propellor gear box (Or at least there should be, I haven't opened it yet! next week is when I'll be starting to use it.) what type of oil should be in there?

Sorry I didn't reply sooner - my pc was sick for the last week!

Gearbox oil. Use ordinary automotive hypoid 90 and the trick is to put it into a clean, dry toilet cleaner bottle, the ones that squirt it under the rim, and fill the gearbox from the bottom hole until the oil emerges from the top hole.
if you check the specifications of outboard gearbox oil against automotive oil there is no difference. It is just that anything for a boat is at rip off price.
My outboard has used automotive oil for over twenty years and is thriving on it!
