Once again, there's not a right or a wrong answer, we are simply looking for the sequence of actions that you would take in the following situation. "You are at the helm of your 40ft twin-engined semi-displacement cruiser. You are returning to your marina berth after a pleasant day’s cruising in the estuary. It is an hour past high tide. As you round the cardinal mark at the end of the sand spit, you see a 35ft sailing yacht, that has tried to take a short cut, aground. The skipper waves frantically at you. Clearly he’d like to be towed off. Your local knowledge tells you he hasn’t gone too far onto the mud and you should be able to get within 20ft of his stern without going aground yourself. Do you try to help him and if so how would you go about it? In short, what now, skipper?"

Already answered it. Go as close as possible, bows first, so props are in deapest water and you can still use the props to steer, cant do that if arse is tied to yacht. Tie yacht stern to bow, back up useing as little power as possible to get a result.

The only thing I would say to add to that is maybe drop a hook on the aproach, just in case. Get the sailing yacht skipper to heel her over to lift some weight off the keel.

If either boat has a tender and there is a spare crewman, then use that for the line transfer rather than getting too close because of a weak throwing arm.

How about edge your way in, pass a line and tell him to tie it around his mast. Then full throttle, rip the mast out and hey presto he becomes one of us...... reduction in weight will allow him to float free.

If he protests then just ignore him.

1.) Establish communication with yachie, either VHF or shouting - it could be he is sinking or has a medical emergency on board as well.
2.) Based on response, possibly radio Coastguard and let them know the situation, plus what you plan to do. If anything.
3.) If brave, and yottie stuck is the only problem, and you're confident you're not going to end up gettting stuck yourself given tide and wind conditions - rig a bridle plus towrope, chuck towrope, and attempt a pull off. Possibly from the front cleats if v.shallow, easier from the back in some ways if more depth available.
4.) Accept bottle of wine if successful. Gallic Shrug if not. Advise CG either way of what happened.

I would make contact by vhf and offer food ,drink and to launch my tender to offload any crew who need a lift ashore.

As to a tow no certainly not, by the time you both rig a tow line the tide will have fallen and there is no point in drying out with him !

I know the Humber Estuary well and I wouldn't try to get within 20 ft of any sand bank, sand banks in estuaries have a tendency to move and frequently more than 20ft between the 30 day chart issues.

I don't see the relevance of getting within 20ft or 3 ft, once the tide has dropped a few inches that is it, 10 ton held in place by sticky mud/suction.

All the power in the world isn't going to move it, especially the meagre offerings of an SD boat, all that will happen is a few cleats will get ripped out and a few lacerations for anyone who is daft enough to get in the way.

I may be making a poor decision but it would be my plan and it would end happily for my family rather than waisting time and exposing both boats to extra risk.

Hi all replied to last article and it got printed! along with one other it went under my daughter email address.

I once pulled a raggy off the chain ferry in cowes, god knows how SHE got along side of it but the ferry could not move till I pulled her off, we had to do all the work she hadnt got a clue how to steer away from it, her engine was running too.

If I ever did it again I would expect a thankyou nextime as I didnt get one from her.
