Given £15k perhaps no more than £20k. Med based. Purpose: fishing with blokes + socialising / entertaining with say 6 on board. Wanted: heads, small galley, occ sleep for 2. Don't need a trailer; don't like American; Hardy's, Trusty's, IP22's etc are too staid and old fashioned. .... and Ranseas and Merry Fishers are totally lacking in character....... What is there? What do I do? Something modern-ish, in or outboard, say less than 20 years old, about 18-23 feet, something to be proud of....... oh vey, where do I look?

How about this:

Essex boatyards have a couple of 2003 boats with KAD32 diesel engines )fast and economical). OK, so you would have to drag it down to spain, but it ticks all the boxes and could probably be had for close to your budget.

Details here

Well thank you for that. I never expected the first response to be so close to what I want and as our offspring are Suffolk based, so Essex is just next door. I now have a good reason for sleepless nights but am open to any other suggestions. But thank you for the response. Ciou.

whats wrong with American boats - some of my best boats have been uncle sams

come to think of it
all of my boats have been american - almost

my American Hunter Legend yacht has been built to the absolute minimu quality. The design and the plastic is fine, everything else is to the absolute minimum. The lifting keel unit is a non-replacement non-serviceable casette which has developed excessive wear; a non operable situation, The trailer is dangerous....my Jeep is crap, slick on the outside but awful under the bonnet. No USA builds every again.

where to look: in the marina where you plan to be

Unless you really know wot you are doing ( and i spose that's a no since asking this sort of question) your very best option is to buy from a dealer/broker who is right there in the marina where you plan to keep the boat. That way you'll know you'll have got aty least some sort of technical backup when it goes wrong.

Note that i said "when" not "if" cos it will go wrong, essentially because although very nice modern engineering, it gets whammed through seawater and then left alone, possibly the worst thing you could do to any machine with electrical thingys. However, erm, marine engineering is heavily populated with bods who couldn't get a job in the car industry which is more exactling and pays better, and also engineering design even in the car industry includes a lot of muppets who couldn't get employed anywhere else. Er, well anyway.

Also i wd get a secondhand thing and get a stonking deal. A buyer is a v rare creature these days...
