balance is a wonderful thing

this might be a slightly short thread

here is mine for starters.....

the price of almost everything nautical from insurance to warm clothes

snoring men within earshot

the sound of other people using the loo just inches from my head

washing up

Dylan,

the bane of my life is putting the mainsail boom cover on; it may be a mental thing as it signifies the trip is over, but I've had various covers both pro and home made, and they are an utter unfathomable pain to fit !

Not much else gets me when sailing, but people in rafts at town quays etc who deliberately place a dinghy amidships ought to be keel-hauled; on a triple keeler covered in barnacles !

you are either sailing in the wrong direction or in the wrong place

you would be amazed at how good the sailing can be when up a river or estuary when out at sea it would be impossible

and sail downhill whenever possible

I agree about sail covers though - aaaagh!

as for blokes with bigger boats..... I genuinely feel sorry for the depth challenged when they are confined to the entrances to the estuaries

Pyefleeet at Brightlingsea is a wonderful deep anchorage

but go a mile or two upstream and drop a hook deep in the salt marshes

sublime!

Taking the OP at his word - not what I dislike about sailing but what are the most common male dislikes:

1. Slow
2. Seasick
3. Wet
4. Being shouted at when they do something wrong
5. Having to wash up
6. Being stopped from turning on the engine when speed drops
7. Reefing

I can provide the triple keeler but sorry no barnacles at the mo :D

My dislike: Self opinionated know-it-all skippers who bark orders at their crew and treat marina
staff like deck-wipes. (seem to be mostly ex-military who failed leadership courses)

As this is more generally about sailing, can I post in here as a sailor rather than as a woman?

What I don't like about sailing...

Lock attendants who aim the lines at your head, rather than a foot in front of you...
Filling the diesel tank - such a faff, but only did it once last year and still have three gallons left.
Needing a pee when dressed in multiple layers..
Icy decks..
Wanting a nice glass of wine when back in the berth but cant as I have to drive home..
Not having self-tailing winches on my boat...
Lack of forward viz when the liferaft is onboard..

Thats it for the moment.

Dianne,

lock attendants seem to be polarised into two distinct categories;

really helpful people with a sunny disposition who can't do enough to help ( I find the men and women at Port Solent like this but it's a couple of years since I visited ),

OR,

failed nazi traffic wardens who get a kick out of opening lock gates or paddles as quickly as possible to throw boats and crews around, slam gates shut just as one is approaching, or throw rather than pass lines, as you mention.

When I worked on the French Canals the lock keepers were great people without exception, I still kick myself for not marrying the young lady at a certain lock South of Dijon, and it seems the chum I got to take over my job there did just that !

Just console yourself with the thought the git who threw lines at rather than to you will be there all through the week, peering at nothing and probably with icy feet !

Agree!

The ones on KS fit well enough, but it's still a faff to do up all the little fastenings (I have more because the peak halyard has to meet the gaff part-way along). Plus of course I have two of them. It's probably my least-favourite job on board, strangely. When I sail with other people I usually find another task to busy myself with and ask them to put the covers on while I do it :)

The new boat is almost certainly going to have a stack-pack fitted - not so much for catching the sail when lowering, but so that covering it consists of pulling a zip :D

Needing a pee when dressed in multiple layers..

I thoroughly approve of the "posting as a sailor rather than as a woman" - the stereotyping that goes on here sometimes is quite uncomfortable. But I'm afraid that specific complaint does belong on the ladies' thread :D

The blokes who always talk in very loud booming voices so that they're RP can be heard by everyone else. Total W****ers!
