I do like a nice shower at the end of the day. The boat one is ok but not brill. Chatham has excellent ablutions.
My home marina on the east coast was terrible, in need for an up grade.
Well now i can say SYH has had a revamp. Very nice. Well recommend staying.
Am I the only one that thinks like that

Shelter and close proximity to pubs and a shop (bonus points for chippy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Chatham ablutions seconded, but otherwise its in the middle of nowhere if you are on Shank's pony. A bridge and gate to the shoplex and/or the pub would be a significant improvement. A better pub servig better beer would be another improvement.

Probably heresy to say so but my faves have been Puerto Solente because there is somewhere close by to go, UCI, shps, eateries etc, Gillingham cos the kids love it and The Strand, and St Kats, best/cheapest hotel in London, bring your own hotel room.

Did you do an accompanied trip to St Kats or Holland last year?

Colvic?
Silver?

Seems familiar.

Doug

BTW
the faclities at SYH were in dire need of attention.
might persuade me to go back now

A bloody great big boat with a bloody great fridge full of beer!

Oh and suppose an ice maker for the girlie vodka & coke etc...

Well, a good start are the finger pontoons. Those pathetic jobbies which you find in French marinas where you sink upto your ankles when you jump on them from your boat are a real turn-off for me. I want cleats in the right position for mobos not just yots, a fully operational 32A shorepower socket with the breaker on the outside and a water tap with a hose and good pressure. Then I want an infinite supply of big trolleys with properly pumped up tyres and walkways wide enough to push them on, a shallow ramp even at LWS and a car park next to my boat not 1/2 mile way. Good security is a must both for the marina and the car park and, of course friendly and efficient staff.
I dont care if the marina has bogs or showers 'coz I'll use my own thanks but on-site I want a greasy spoon type caff, a convenience store, chandlery and a choice of marine engineers plus a pub within staggering distance. A modern high capacity hoist as well
All tides access plus absolutely definitely no lock but no strong tide running through the marina and not 8 miles run up some manky river either
My perfect marina. Scenery is optional

City Marina, Charleston, South Carolina. Reasonable price, free minibus into the downtown plus they'll collect you too. A golf cart takes you and your shopping back to the boat. Splendid ablution block. Choice of bars and seafood restaurant on site.

What else? Oh, the southern totty running the place very easy on the eye, the accent perfect.

Otherwise, Mystic Seaport. Bloody expensive at $3 a foot per night, but has a very good museum, which you are free to wander round after the plebs have been kicked out at 17:00. Free night for "alien yachts".

Location, Location, Location

For us its the location, close to a nice village/town with good restaurants, 'cos we live in the midlands so it has to double as a holiday home. Close second is access all tides, no lock and transit time to open water. It also has to be calm so its comfortable to stay on even if the winds blowing, and so I know the boats OK if there's a storm due. We're pretty much self contained on board, so facilities are unimportant, and so long as lifting/engineering services are available locally I'm not particularly bothered that they have to be part of the marina.
