What make of pump is this please?

I have a Volvo MD2030B which I believe can be fitted with a Jabsco or Johnson raw water pump.

Which one do I have? There's no obvious markings on it. I need to know in order to order a new seal.

Looks the same as mine from memory - a Johnson F4B-9. I replaced my cover with a speedseal. I could check just to be sure as I'm going down to the boat this afternoon, as mine is a 2030C.

If I'm correct the impellor is VP part 897055 or Johnson 09-1026B, and the pump service kit is Johnson 09-45905. I don't have a part number for the seal.

BTW, there's a lot of rubber debris sitting on the pump. You should check your alternator belt for wear and alignment.

The rubber debris is because I always overtighten the belt. I don't know why. I've never understood the advice along the lines of 'tighten until there's X amount of slack'. Depends how hard you push the belt doesn't it???

Anyway, after a few hours it settles down /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also, I suspect battery 2 is a bit tired and stressing the alternator.

PS. The weeping around the pump is because I check the impellor too often...

I keep details of boat spares, equipment models and serial numbers etc in a word doc and happen to keep a copy on this pc. It's saved my bacon on a few occasions.

Or did you mean the fan-belt debris? Been described as many things, some less flattering, but never an Anorak!

Lawd sakes Ruffles, the mfrs don't put the drive belt instructions there for nothing:)

Having it too tight will almost certainly lead to premature bearing failure of anything associated with the belt.
This will almost certainly not manifest itself at a convenient moment. Most likely on a lee shore or when picking up a mooring in tricky circumstances.

Leave a bit of slack on the belt. you should be able to deflect it on the longest part of its run with moderate pressure.

If it squeals it's too slack!

Yes, it's the same Johnson pump as mine, here's the cover & gasket:

I fitted a Speedseal some time ago as it makes it much easier to inspect or replace the impellor, excuse the poor picture but you get the idea. As regards alternator tension, you should use normal thumb pressure and if you can press the belt down 5mm (3/16") the tension is about righ. Over-tightening the belt will wear the bearings in both alternator and water pump.

There's a 50% chance + sod's law that I've bought the wrong seal. At least I'll know before I strip it down.

Mind you it wasn't dripping when I motored out on Sunday. My nose was though.

PS: Advise on belt tension noted. I suspect I may need to shell out on a new battery. It does squeek occasionally when I switch to charging the second battery.

It just goes to show that people should post when they think they have useful info. I didn't, as though I consider myself non technical and can barely find my way around an engine, I learnt that one at about the age of ten. Didn't think it would be of use to anyone here, as they'd all know that trick.
