there is a post running at the momment re coppercoat,i have put my experiences down regarding it .and asked a couple of questions, one of which is the above,the reason i ask it again is because its easy to see a post and think don't know much about that and carry on.thanks mike,

my problem is my coppercoat does not seem to be working to well,i've covered the reasons why and what it might be but the question i am asking here is specifically about paint on anti fouls and mainly in the med.if i end up having to use one i want a brand that is available in the med and one that you have found works.
i think this would be of intrest to others heading in from colder waters,as the marine life appears to me to be pretty aggressive.
if you have made a comment on the other post thankyou i'll read it and make a note,no need to write twice unless you want to.

i've also got sore hands through scrubbing,can't believe how soft they have got /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

They love International Uno /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Almost no growth after 9 months in Lagos, I now have a growth of short grass, (which can be scrubbed off by diving), and quite a few barnacles.

The prop is covered in solid worm like barnacles, which I cant get off with a wire brush, although the ordinary shell like barnacles can be knocked off.

Have tried 3: -

Sea-Jet - not bad, still pretty good at the end of the season;
International Micron - fouled within weeks;
Ameron ABC+ - good for a season in the Med, an Atlantic crossing and a season in the Caribbean, the best so far.

I use the cheapest I can find, normally fishing boat stuff and add a kilo of very hot chilie powder to each 20 litres, works a treat for me.

Over 5 seasons in the Med from France to Turkey and back to Italy I used International Micron Extra, 2 coats (except for the sail-leg which has Trilux) and found it fine for 1 season so long as you kept moving. As I accepted that I would haul out either for winter storage or just before the start of the season this was acceptable. But it was interesting how much weed grew when she sat in the water for winter without moving. It came off easily enough with a water blaster though.

When in Turkey there was a lot of talk about more powerful local antifoul since they were not subject to EU rules. Unfortunately I have no direct feedback from users but have secondhand reports from other cruisers that some who did try the Turkish stuff were very disappointed.

I look forward to other's experiences and also to their expectations. Do you really expect to leave a boat in warm waters for months without moving and find little or no growth?

I had another element to consider. The Volvo saileg requires an oil change every 200hrs but on my model it can only be fully drained from the sump plug at the bottom of the leg when hauled out. Since we did that and more during our season I accepted the need to haul out and thus antifouling was just another of the jobs that was better done then than regretted mid season if it didn't last for more than 1 year.

Have very bad experience with Cruiser Uno, any growth loves it. Micron Extra was very good, lasted two seasons, but it is very expensive. I presently have the local Turkish "Transocean" brand. Very cheap and so far (applied in March) looks good, but I have moved a lot most of the season so it is early days yet. Test will be leaving the boat in the water four months this coming winter. Will report back next year.

I am conscious that Cruiser Uno is an eroding antifoul, so am not surprised that I am experiencing growth, as I tend to sail merely to get from A to B, then stay there for a while.

I suspect that, since the "nasties" have been banned from antifoul, it is often no more than a nice paint job, (or not so nice, depending on your point of view).

In Cyprus we always use the local stuff - 4 coats which usually lasts 2 seasons - locally its called "No Name Antifouling" and costs about $ 30 for 2.5 litres - when you take the lid off the tin it utters a deep growl and everytime you load the roller with it the boat shudders from end-to-end - hate to think what it contains. Have just checked the tin of some we have from three seasons ago and there is a small plain label which covers the words on the tin "contains TBT" - it appears to have been imported from Israel or Lebanon. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Its a dutch product. Distributed, I think, by Wurth. I bought it in Malta - Whitesails in Msida Creek sell it. TBT free, and is used on big ships. Have learned its used regularly on boats in the Caribbean who may need a certificate that their anifouling is TBT free when challenged by the US coastguard. If I didnt have Ameron already I would be trying SeaHawk Islands 44 Plus with the extra tin booster. As its full of tin it cannot be sold in the EU or US but you may be able to find it elsewhere in the Med. Some antifoulings are not compatible with others and may need a barrier primer coat first, or the old stuff sanding off.

Micron Extra is an eroding anti-foul too. As to what difference there is in the recipe, only the chemists know, but it is more expensive.
The problem with choosing antifoul on price is that the cost of hauling out is usually twice the cost of the paint - labour being much the same - so why skimp on 50-100Eu if you have to haul out early to paint again.
But, and there is always a but, one never REALLY knows how well the paint will work in a specific area until one has the experience. Hopefully some of these replies will give a bit of a picture of real experience.
Keep the thread active.

I'll tell you something I have noticed.....

where the antifoul has chipped of, (or whatever), in a few small patches, there is no grass/weed, no barnacles, just the slightest hint of green.

I wonder if GRP might be it's own best antifoul???
