What maintenance now engine\'s out?

I've just had the engine removed so I can replace the stern gland with a PSS seal (couldn't get the flange off the shaft, hence taking the prop off and doing it the long way round!).

Anyway the question is, now its out I was wondering if there's any other maintenance which might be worth doing other than the usual annual work? Its a 23 yr old Yanmar 2QM15 if that makes any difference.

Clean off and paint the bilge area round the engine. Perhaps epoxy it if the hull is dry.
Check out the engine mounts and renew if doubtful.
Decide whether you are going to pull back the gaiter each time you put the boat in the water or connect up the seal to the engine cooling water and do that job too.
Fit an oil extraction pump as Betamarine do - it makes life much easier afterwards.
Sort out the oil leaks, clean and paint the engine
err. you werent thinking of puttine her back in the water this year wre you?

Two possible routes to take:

1....Strip it down to the last nut and bolt inspect every thing critically, taking measurements of bore and bearing wear and replace anything getting towards the limits, grind in all valves. Rebuild with all new gaskets and seals

2....If it ain't broke don't fix it

Oddly enough I've just had the luxury of free access to the engine bay -- and am about to fit a PSS seal 'backwards'. Not sure of layout on Gibsea, but check/renew all those bits you so rarely get a good look at: plumbing, hull fittings, hoses (and hose clips, especially if they're the rubbish ones with corroding screws). It's a bit frustrating pouring money into areas you'll never see, but obviously that's where the boat ought to be soundest.

Funny, there seems to be something like that every year!
I had thought about connecting the seal up to the cooling system, but that sounds like a lot of work, and another thing to go wrong - it only needs to get blocked, and the results could be pretty disastrous.
The oil extraction pump - is that just for the oil change? I use a Pela extractor at the moment, which is slow, but not too much hassle.

Thanks for the advice, though. As ever, spring is just coming too quickly for me!

Oil extraction pump

Beta marine permanently fit a fairly large diameter pipe to the sump plug which is coupled to a simple hand pump. This gets oil out, hot or cold, at a fast rate. Its much better than the usual hand pumps though much the same size simply because its connected through a wide pipe.
Theres not much gained in stowage space though. You carry the dirty oil in the PELA. I use an old oil can.
