Am i right in thinking that this is an attachment point for some kind of Autohelm device? Its located in the cockpit immediately behind the wheel on my ketch. There is another one inside the boat, presumably for storing said device....

If so, its redundant and i can remove it as there is a Raymarine autopilot fitted!

If the side bars were vertical I'd say it was for a grid steering compass.

Yes - it is the mounting point for the control box for an old Autohelm. I had one in the cockpit and one in the cabin for storage too.

Just for further clarification - the pic is wrong way up, side "flanges" should be vertical, well, slightly tapered in to bottom for something to slide in from the top - its made out of some very tough kind of plastic

There is also a redundant power supply socket situated nearby which looks like the same as I had for the Autohelm on my previous boat

As bedouin says. I had the same and the power supply confirms it.

It looks like the bracket for the Autohelm 3000 wheel steering autopilot unit and having a power supply point close by would seem to bear this out.

Another case of somebody removing a bit of kit and not doing the job properly, mutters engineer who has over the last two winters removed 100 meters of wire that was not connected to anything left by previous owners.
