I have a lazy jack that slides into the groove on the boom along with the mainsail foot. Is there a particular technique or method how to slide the sail foot in the lazy jack and groove which saves me liters of sweat and lots of *)%%^ words /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks

If you can get a couple of helpers then it makes the job easier/faster, one at the end one in the middle and one feeding the sail/cover into the groove.

I have done it on my own on numerous occasions and it involves walking backward and forward a lot and (yes) swearing quite a bit also. So, I think your technique of sweating and swearing a lt is just about the correct one !!!

The job's a great deal easier if the mainsail is, or can be fitted, loose-footed (which modern sailmakers seem to prefer). In this case you'd just need a bolt rope of suitable diameter attached to the lazy bag. There's no need to attach the rope to the bag along its whole length. Just sewing it scurely at the aft end is sufficient, then feeding in the rest as you slide the bag along the boom.

It does make it a bit easier if you apply some sort of lubricant to the groove.I use "Dry Ice" which is a PTFE paste from cycle shops.Candle wax, furniture polish, silicon spray all do the same thing.

Clothes pegs or similar to hold the bolt-rope in place in the bag, then feed bag and sail into the boom groove removing the pegs as you go. I did mine in the garage then took the whole boom/bag/sail assembly to the boat as one. I used these instead of clothes pegs, since they were to hand.

Its not too difficult on my Sadler. I use a blunt object to push the sail cover cloth into the groove, a foot or so at a time Then pull the mailsail rope (?) foot into that space. I manage it by myself OK

I think I tie the front end of the cover to the mast to stop it moving with the sail.

Will write it down next Spring when the job is to be done again

Good luck

A technique that works for me:

Do you have an outhaul in the boom? Or a reefing line in the boom? Start feeding the stack pack/main into the boom from the mast end. Tie the outhaul direct to the clew - don't use the outhaul car. Grab the outhaul line where it emerges below the gooseneck. Now alternately pull the line and push the stackpack. Saves walking across the cabin top 100 times.

Works for me. I had to fit mine half a dozen times when I was making it. A right pain.

The worse job to do alone this time of year is folding a furling genoa. I try to roll mine along the luff wire. Only it's so heavy /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
