Anybody know what the stuff is you can buy to put under a mattress on a boat called? (NOT condoms, porn mags or cash /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) It's like a fine mesh/horse hair looking mat that lets air circulate, I have seen it at SIBS but didn't get the name. Any help or links to where or what it is would be appreciated. It can be cut to size and stops mositure building up when mattresses are straight onto GRP.

Mattresses straight onto GRP ???

Tsk, tsk........even my (poor man's) Binliner has carpet stuff on the GRP - no condensation on my cheap septic rubbish !!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I agree, I do see a major cock up in Cranchi's design as we have damp matresses in the morning after a night of action /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif So should I glue some carpet to the shiny white GRP or does that get wet as well?

stop @anking in the boat

love ya

That's the stuff, googled it and found it at mail speed marine, but no sizes given, thickness or area it covers, only offers standard, what is that?

Thanks for finding it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Condensation's all about humidity levels in the air and contact with any surface at a temperature below that of the ambient air. AFAIK, if you have humid air making contact with cold, hard surfaces you'll get condensation. Think single v. double glazing. The outer pane has cold air hitting it, but because there's a layer of insulating, dry air between it and the warm inner pane, no condensation.

I would have thought that covering the GRP with any kind of insulating, "soft" surface such as carpet can only help provide the barrier needed to stop condensation. And I can confirm that it does indeed work.

Looks like another project coming up, then ?!?!? Glueing it on with Evo-Stik would work, but don't forget the risk-assessment re. flamability/fumes, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

No room for slats I'm afraid, that horse hairy stuff will do the job, just cannot believe no site tell you the size your buying.

I'm not sure if swmbo is incontenent because her's gets wetter than mine /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Maybe a rubber mattress cover is the answer, but that would grip to much on her rubber cat suite /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: What is the stuff you put under a mattress on aboat called?

I have an awfull problem with damp under the matress even with just sleep, so god knows how much you collect in a night. Anyway I too saw it at sbs and took a roll to the boat. About £70 I think from Marine bedding company. Product called dryweav. Tel no 01425 460 605. Hope that helps.

I was also told its not just the fibreglass, it could be that you sleep over a large locker that is cold and this creates the condensation. You should line this as well.

For me the liner has kept the matress dry and off the fibreglass but the moisture is still there??

Re: What is the stuff you put under a mattress on aboat called?

Was also told by the company that the wooden slate idea is only worth the extra if you want more comfort as well. It does not improve condensation above the mesh. Also price quoted was for one double bed only.

Re: What is the stuff you put under a mattress on aboat called?

That makes sense, we ARE over a very large locker, it's called the bow, the rear ones don't get wet, just thought it was swmbo dreaming about me every night /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I will call them tomorrow, I even had a sample and yes the price of £70 sounds right /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: What is the stuff you put under a mattress on aboat called?

Could I glue down carpet tiles AND put mesh on that to be double sure?

Problem is I have a large plywood hatch that covers a removable hanging locker box, so that has to be overcome.

I have also found condensation dripping off the metal of the roof hatch, is that normal or am I just hot stuff /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif We have a dehumidifier and if that is left on in the lounge with the door open then it is dry as a bone in the morning.

Re: What is the stuff you put under a mattress on aboat called?

Polystyrene tiles/newspaper/acoustic foam would do the job great - but look bluddy terrible. Just got to use a soft material as a barrier, that's all there is to it. True that there's still moisture in the air, and that can only be removed by ventilation/dehumidifier.

Re: What is the stuff you put under a mattress on aboat called?

you can cut the mesh round the locker lid, leaving one side to make a flap. Its all explained in the leaflet. One tip is to make sure you cut it out a little larger than required so it fits better.

With de humidifiers be carefull when left on at night. Us humans are made up of water and you can de hydrate very quickly whilst asleep and wake up with a real headache. I do not recommend them to be on when your on board unless very low
